aha, but I've already brainwashed the local penguins to do my bidding, which will start with a full scale assault on your IRS! which one you dont know

(yesI know, polar bears not penguins, so stuff it.)
nuclear warfare is a BAAAAAD idea if your fighting for land, cuz that would mean you cant live in it for 100's of years (at least, not if you dont want to die anyway)
but they aren't fighting for land, they're fighting for teh oil UNDER the ice, so I guess nuclear warfare works for them

The Russian claim is that the area that they are claiming is an extension of the continental shelf. Under U.N. treaty if their claim is recognized they have the ownership right s to the oil reserves in that area.
They started making this claim back in I think it was the 70's when the United Nations treaty allowed countries, such as the USA to claim that the territorial waters of the country extended out to the continental shelf, not just 3 miles out. This effetely make the reach of U.S. waters 200 miles, thus forcing soviet Nuclear subs to be forced to move off the eastern seaboard. They are using the same logic to claim the rights to the sea bottom in the Arctic.
It is about the oil, not the ice!
but then huge portions of Europe share territorial waters, which only brings back the fighting. stupid aristocrats...
