I suppose *any* game would get repetitive if it was played long enough. The question is then, how do you prevent the game from feeling repetitive for as long as possible? Perhaps one way to do this, is to adjust or eliminate whatever makes the game feel tedious.
One of the things I find tiresome is how long it can take for ships and fleets to move and jump to different locations. If I'm staring at my screen waiting for my resources rise to the point where I can afford to research a tech, because my fleet has yet to arrive at a battle field, then I'm not having much fun.
Having researchable techs to increase ship speeds, or having a space structure that allows for quicker jumping in your systems would help.

As for AI I agree with xerxes, I would prefer having a good AI to a fun multiplayer. Because while I really like multiplayer, this game takes long enough with a small game, and while i would play it when I have the time to, my internet connection can be unstable, so while sometimes my internet is excellent, other times multiplayer is not a viable option.
Also about the waiting times for things, such as ships and resources, it can make you feel like going afk for a bit, but I also feel like if I do go afk, then someone may attack me, so I don't.
At any rate, I do like this game alot already. I am on my second game, having abandoned my first game because the map was small (I thought for a first game a small map would be better, it probably wasn't, as I encountered the enemies right away), and my current game has five systems, and four players, and while the AI does not seem fantastic at the moment, though good enough (for me at least) to play against. With an upgrade in AI intelligence and interactability (perhaps upgrading the diplomacy system), and the addition of the two other races, this game will be great.
