Ok remember how caps were part of the research tree and people were going rabble rabble at this with various arguments about where Caps should be on the tech tree. THen IC decided to make caps available from start with a progressive tech tree to increase cap fleet , and everyones like wow...cool this works pretty well.
Well i think phase tech with all the rabble rabble about it being too high for mp games , but being too superpowerful for low tech ,mirrors this problem.
So I think we need a new approach to Vasari tech.
Foremost ,look at how Phasegating is such a big part of Vasari philosophy. Look at how schod desperately wants Vasari to be all about utilising this very unique and diversifying technology since its like a breathe of fresh air from all the steam. (pun)
So my idea is this. Make phasegating an ability available right from the start/tech 1 research . However create a progressive phasegating tech-tree much like the cap one which reduces the cost? of gating? and maybe the number of ships you can gate and maybe even the distance you can gate , even the cooldown of a gate which could be 10 minutes!. even number of gates you can construct. tech1-3 = 1 gate with 10 min cooldown? , tech 5 = 2 gate , 7min cooldown. tech 7 = 3 gates?
Balance it so that in a small mp game of Fire+ice where u may only have 2 res stations , maybe in the entire game the amount of phasegating you have done could be...
- 2 siege frigates phased to an enemy homeworld 5 jumps away as a distraction as you and your ally attack the other enemy with normal phase travelling.
- colony frigate phased to one asteroid near the artic because it the enemy were guarding the sun and it was too dangerous
- 5 skirmishers to a dead asteroid 3 jumps away to try and help an ally who was suprised attacked and you needed to react quicktime but because of this you have stalled big time on cash , but your thankful ally has survived his flagship so you feel it has just payed off.
Because of low tech ,phasing could cost alot which means sending a cap could cost you the same amount as a cap..The more tech you obtain , the cheaper phasing becomes , to reflect the need to phase large fleets as games get bigger.
what do people think?
