Need some help from current players...

Concerning genre and gameplay..

I've been looking over PCGamer.com's forums and Wikipedia for a few hours now... I was trying to find a game that combined space exploration/civlization with the classic C&C style of free-style control (i.e. not turn-based). Galatic Civilizations really took it home except for the fact it was turn-based. Looking for something that combines diplomacy, exploration, economic balancing, technological advance and some military action as well... However, I'm not looking for a game based mainly on military action.. I want a mix of everything really.

So, I was wondering if the current players of SoaSE could give me some insight into the game... As I haven't seen a demo on the site. I was also wondering if there was a decent single-player mode as I play World of Warcraft mainly and I'm just looking for a "Space C&C" to occupy my free time until more content is released. If there is a strong single-player version, is there any huge differences between 1P and MP?

Thanks a bunch for any insight given! If this game isn't what I'm looking for, could you make some recommendations as well?

In all honesty, there is not much (to some people's views, there is actually NONE) diplomacy in the game. A decent amount of exploration and teching up, yes. Military action? Oh Yeah. Got you covered there.

There is not a single player campaign, as most people view it. There are instead a ton of maps and random maps available. In other words, it's all sandbox. Make up your own story, basically, which I like doing actually.

So...I'm not sure it'll be what you want.

With 1.03 just released, Ironclad is going to work on the demo now. You might consider waiting and giving that a shot first.

Personally, I like the game and I can't wait to see how it improves (a la Gal Civ 1 to Gal Civ 2) in the future. But, at the moment, it might be a little too militarily focused for you.

Sounds basically like there's multiplayer and then skirmish maps and such. Which works, any real strategy game will have a heavy military theme to it IMO. Which is fine, I just want other things as well. Diplomacy isn't THAT important, as long as it features a focus on exploration and technological advance I could probably have some fun with it.

I might pick it up today when I go out. Thanks for the reply.

Like Marikir mentioned, now that 1.03 is out, Ironclad is going to focus on pushing out a demo for the game.. so if you can stand a few more weeks wait, you'll be able to try it out.

As far as diplomacy goes, one of the devs did note it was getting some major changes, but they weren't ready for 1.03. In short, expect pretty much everything to improve anyway

This game is well worth spending your money on just for the replay value. I played one large scale map 5v5 for over 20 hours before my team was able to wipe out the enemy forces and take their home system. The scale of these games is just huge, the pace is fairly fast and the combat is usually between large fleets on both sides. If you like RTS you will love this game. No single player campaign, but the selection of skirmish maps makes up for that.
