Which do you prefer?
Units to scale as they zoom or to stay a fixed size?
I prefer them scaling as I zoom. I want to be able to see what they are when I look at an overview of the area.
Prefer the option, but default should be Fixed. I think them growing and shrinking takes away from that "Epic" feeling you should get as you view your surroundings.
I just want to piont out that it's not always good to give more options. Makes things seem unpolished and not thought through. In this case I would have a checkbox - scaling on / off. Default off. No slider, the slider seems like unnecessary micro.
This is exactly the reason I don't like scaling. It completely kills the atmosphere.
THIS. I kept meaning to bring this up but forget. I have a quad core CPU that I'm sure can handle leaving some of the extra visual spruce on the table while I'm playing from a higher perspective.
You didn't show a zoomed out perspective of the fixed size, but assuming they get relatively smaller against the map I'd take fixed.
Personally I vastly prefer the units to be smaller when zoomed in. I like the larger pewter pieces zoomed out, but when I zoom in it's really nice to seem them in a more natural scale. I really don't like the huge figures when zooming in.
I prefer the second option, actually. Though I seem to be in the minority on that.
I can't say whether I like scaling or not. It does kill that feeling of being a god in control of the little people when they start to stand toe to toe with mountains. I think scaling would work much better in a game like GalCiv, since the stars should be massive compared to the ships, but are not so in the game.
I like leaving the option in for the player though, it should be up to them.
p.s. What kind of performance hit does it have?
Easy.
Scale with zoom, but don't scale making the units so small when you zoom in. The whole scale thing is to help see the units when you zoom out from the default view to have a more strategic overview on the map.
Scaling rocks.... I think it looks a little weird when you zoom all the way in (baby sovereign), but that might just be the graphics.
Personally I would prefer the option.. so that way when I zoom in, for detailed images, I can spin around them and enjoy them in their environment. But also don't mind them being larger when viewing from a bit farther out.
copy this!
Put the option in beta 3 and we can try it out and see what is better.
I think there's a sweet spot between the two, the zooming out should shrink the units some but not as much as the level of zoom because at some point they just start obscuring the other tiles.
So can we get a slider instead of the checkbox for selecting the unit size % when zoomed out ?
Scaling looks unnatural. I like the fixed.
Honestly if you want a really good opinion try throwing in a typical endgame situation. Dozens of units on every tile (since each army will need its own tile) and see how you feel about them scaling then.
An option for either would be great but when choosing one or the other, I'd rather the units have a fixed size. As others have said, the pewter figures on the cloth map are great but when I'm zoomed in and looking at the actual world, I'd like things to be of an at least believable scale.
Personally I prefer a bit of scaling when zooming, though I think the scale range is a little too large at the moment (units get too small when zooming in, and too large when zooming out).
However, seeing as how you have a checkbox, I don't see a reason not to leave it!
In my oppinion, both behaviours demonstrated suck, and neither should be in a finished product.
Instead, it should be an amalgan of both. Zooming in and seeing everything shrink to half the tilesize just looks extremely silly. There should be a minimum size beyond which zooming in will not make the units smaller. When zooming out, the same problem. They should get larger up to a certain bound, to prevent them clipping into each other, etc. Meanwhile, simply making the units stay the same size all the time, makes the map harder to decifer as a user interface.
Also, there should be no option, at least not in the default game settings. If the game zooming behaves correctly, then it should behave that way. Tho I'm all for mods being able to change unit size and scaling behaviour willy nilly.
I also like the idea of a slider. But if that is too hard, why not simply keep the checkbox and let the user decide on the fly?
I much prefer that the units size stay fixed to the landscape, and get smaller as I zoom out.
Slightly related... The zoom on my system is very herky-jerky. The entire game runs smoothly, but when I start to zoom the movement is delayed, and as I continue to zoom the effect "sticks" occasionally.
Scaling down and up depending on zoom level making them smaller as we zoom out relative.
I prefer the first option based off the video you have uploaded. Would it be possible to upload a similar video with say a contrasting example with one tile having 1 unit and a second one having say...10 or (or some other larger army type group) in the tile? I could potentially see the lack of scaling being helpful if you have a large group occupying the tile and you wanted to see individual units, etc., for some reason or the other.
I like the second option, it reminds me of the heroes as chess pieces scene in the first Clash of the Titans movie!
I like the scaling, it gives you a good strategic view when zoomed out, and a nice 'realistic' view when zoomed in.
One of the little touches I really liked in beta 2 is for instance when you visit an inn and zoom in all the way. You could actually see your sovereign and his party standing there, same size as the peasants, just being a regular sized human, not this larger than life character. It's little touches like this that can really create atmosphere, and make you feel more connected to the game world.
