Raj21> In Hinduism, Avatar or Avatāra (Devanagari अवतार, Sanskrit for "descent" [viz., from heaven to earth]) refers to a deliberate descent of a deity (an incarnation of a deva (god) from heaven to earth, or a descent of the Supreme Being (i.e., Vishnu for Vaishnavites) and is mostly translated into English as "incarnation", but more accurately as "appearance" or "manifestation".
Yes, westerners often try to put other culture's concepts into an already created paradigm or 'box.' Actually, everybody probably does this. "Incarnation' is a christian concept that has the divine BECOME human. Avatars, as I understand them, don't change the deity, but merely modify the deity's appearance and location, so lesser beings (humans) can meaningfully interact with them. Raj, is this a fair understanding of avatar?
