Why do I always play as the " good guys"?

       I played vanilla Sins for 2 years, I was ALWAYS TEC fighting the alien invasion. Now with mods, I'm either the Federation(SOA2) or the Alliiance (SOGE) or (Reqeuim). In role playing games where I have the option of playing both sides I always play the " hero". (Dragon Age and Fable come to mind).

       Is this normal? some kind of birth defect? Do people who play the outlaws grow up to be ones themselves? lol Some kind of kinship with you bad side?

Why am I limiting myself to only 1/3 of a game that has consumed me for three years?

Anyone else have this dilemma? Otherwise known as the "goody two shoes" syndrome.

I can't be evil. Not in real life and not in games (unless it's a game in which you have to, like GTA). But if it's an RPG, I find myself restarting every time I make myself follow the mean path. KOTOR and Mass Effect come to mind. Every time I finish a game being good, I do a second run being bad, only to abandon it after insulting/killing a few innocent people.

This is probably fairly common. I find myself always playing as the "goody two shoes" in RPG type games. I don't really care as much in RTS's though.

Who says that the TEC, who kicked the peaceful Advent off of a planet, are the "good guys"?  All three races are equally contemptible in various ways.

By the way, if you want to add some variety to your Sins gaming, have you considered logging onto Ironclad Online and trying it against real human opponents and not silly, predicable AI?  If you've been playing it for two years, might it be time to take the next step?

Frankly, I regard all three factions as equally evil.  They all go around using orbital bombardment to subjugate planetary colonies and mercilessly slaughter civilians, then forcibly take control to fuel their war machine.  All three factions are basically despotic and tyrannical.  It's not called Sins of a Solar Empire for nothing, you know. 

 

As for most RPG's with good/evil paths, I find they usually fall into the "lawful stupid" / "psychotic evil" faux paths.  These are the least interesting archtypes, partly because they're so heavily overdone, and partly because the character is so one-dimension.

This goes back to the fiction itself, which is filled with B or C-list writers churning out the same trash over and over again.  And far too many people gobble it up.  Not all rpgs/books/games fall into that category.  Unfortunately, people consume that kind of trash like popcorn in lieu of fiction that actually makes you think.  The writers are simply catering to the consumer.

If I told you Jedi Venators were awesome, would that help?

 

Mechanical differences between sides are pretty slim in vanilla, but man are you missing out in SOA2.  The sides don't play the same at all.

I don't like shooting Fed rebels..it's that bad.

If anything I would have to get in a Klingon against Rom mindset......Don't know much about Dominion, I'm old school.

Yeah, the only game I can think of off the top of my head that gave you additional options was KOTORII. Unfortunately from a gameplay point of view you still want be the ultimate good guy or spawn of evil, because that is the only way you get to unlock the most powerful classes, so it was only really good for strictly role playing purposes.

Actually, it is pretty healthy to find it more "enjoyable" and "natural" to play the roles of good guys.

The very existence of civilisation in general is based on the fact that people are mostly not hostile towards each other, that they would rather work together and help each other out instead of killing and robbing one another. Think of how the world would look like if everybody enjoyed hurting other people if they could get away with it.

I say, if you don't like being evil in a game, if you don't enjoy hurting others for the sake of it even in a virtual scenario... you're perfectly fine.

i almost never play as the good guys in any game because they're usually also the most boring factions lore and design wise
