I actually like the idea of investing in it. I mean, I know it will cost us through the yin yang, but I like the idea of researching fixed upgrades and then having dis or dat upgrades that can make two otherwise identical titans totally different beasts.

Can you imagine building one with long range bombardment capabilities and backing it with fighters only to discover the enemy has powerful shield systems and close in anti-strikecraft capabilities?

why do you think that? Because the Advent blow and their Titans are likely to be floating churches that just toot rhetoric out of giant speakers while having supremely powerful shields but very long beam weapons that couldn't cut through a hull, much less shave a chimp suffering from mange?

    Well, if he doesjoin the chimps, it means that he won't be commanding an armada of ships, and that he will miss out on the Titans.  His chimp empire will stare up at the skies and wonder what that pretty, shiny light is heading their way......up until the moment the Titan's planetary, Death Star superlaser blows them to smithereenies! 

    At that point, all that will be left are bald chimps going

While this may in fact be very true ... the motive power enabling bayonets to get in range still has to do just that ... get in range. No bullets does tend to make this harder.
