Windows 8 Consumer Preview To Launch 2/29/12

The “Consumer Preview” (a.k.a. “Public Beta”) of Windows 8 is scheduled to launch on 2/29/12 at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

The roadmap will be: Developer Preview (9/2011), Beta (the Consumer Preview), RC and then RTM. Microsoft declines to give a date for product shipment. They’ve been burned on that one in the past. Also unknown is whether the x86 and ARM versions will go to market at the same time, although it seems likely they would.

1. No one needs Windows 8 on the desktop.

2. Metro: An ugly, useless interface.

3. Where are the Windows 8 Applications?

4. Vexed Windows developers.

Their point number 1. seems to be shaded by a bit of Linux angst... 2. I have to agree. It ain't pretty. However, the starting OS isn't the final word. There will be ways to improve it (not just 'Tiles') and I'm betting Brad's got stuff up his sleeve. Also, the orb isn't "gone". It appears on mouse-over. 3 and 4, maybe but that can be fixed. 5. If the OS beats IceCreamSandwich, it'll carve out a neat niche and maybe more.

They'll need a big Apps Store and plenty of encouragement/help for devs, as well as tight control and review of the apps. Google didn't and the Android malware is a disaster. Also, they can really get authors for 8Books (or whatever they'll call it) if they take much less of a cut than Apple does. They might even be smarter to have authors provided with the proper word processor (in the Cloud on SkyDrive) for free....

This coming from linux columnists is just laughable.  I think they are just upset that people still don't need linux on the desktop.

Metro is very functional on Win8, and on Windows Phone.  I would bet most of the people who complain about it have never actually used it.  


3. Where are the Windows 8 Applications?

I don't know, where are the Windows 9 applications either?  Windows 8 isn't released yet, and the big public preview isn't even available.  To say where's the apps is just plain stupid.  Do these people attend the MS developer conferences?


4. Vexed Windows developers.

Again, has this person ever spoken to a group of developers?

 

5. Too little, too late for the smartphone/tablet market

It's not too late for the smartphone market as we see a device like the Nokia 900 and WP7 got rave reviews from CES, and since iOS is becoming a very dated and overexposed OS, Windows Phone has a great shot.  

Tablets are up in the air, but we haven't seen any real hardware yet for Windows 8, so this is pure speculation from a biased writer.
