Seem to be that if you make a cargo ship with no colony/constructor/trade module, the ship has no icon.
I like to load one up with sensors and sit it at my empire's edges.
I've noticed the same thing. Try changing the ship type to Support instead of Assault - that's my best advice.
Changing the ship type doesn't solve the problem.
Anyone know why a custom-designed scout ship with a cargo hull, drives, life support and sensors would have no icon?
One of Omnibus ships he sent me a Large Hull had no tactical Icon.
