would it be possible to get a research queue (similar to the production queues), so that we can do some long term research planning.

It's definitely possible, since we already have limited research queuing in the tree screen. I do hope that shift+click queuing is implemented, though.
+1 This would be good for multiplayer when you have to wait for slow people.
