Windows 10 - no big deal...

So what's the fuss about. Windows 10 installed earlier today and, that's it...

I can still do everything I need to with the minimum of effort. I still have my taskbar toolbar 'Programs', so I don't need that ugly start menu. Everything seems easy to find and nothing's broken.

The only thing I need to fix is the fugly look but, isn't that what we skinners do best

(WB10 - where are you?)

well. i was posting a big wall of text about the new machine and somehow it didn't go through. forgot how to fix it. (allow stardock.net in noscript did the trick)

suffice to say. just did a win10 clean install with win 7 key. painless, aside from choices i made, like doing it offline (just in case ms moans about having a win 7 machine connected to the net and installing a win10 machine with the same key.. just in cases installation goes wonky and i need to use the old machine to look for help) and it not installing network drivers automatically off the win10 disk (eh? why? installed the motherboard network drivers manually after and it was then fairly plain sailing... aside from there being no win10 drivers for the monitor - bdm4065 and installed the win8 ones instead)

oh and i was having so much fun installing hdd to the fractal r5 trays with the wrong screws that are too small to hold the grommet and practically goes right through (sort of knowingly.. because i can't find the right ones until well after and had to redo them all)

Quoting alaknebs,

system should be arriving today, got question regarding drivers. should i let win 10 find/update drivers or go d/l them myself?

Even if it's a pre-built system check the mfr's website for motherboard, sound, network, etc., etc. Make sure the PC/motherboard is at the latest, recommended BIOS version. Then make sure the motherboard has the latest chipset drivers. From there make sure sound, network are all at their latest - from the mfr. Then get the latest video driver from your GPU mfr.

They can........but Microsoft gives you a nice little tool to stop that. Click this link and you'll see........

Great tool. I had issues with Windows Updates trying to install an older HP printer driver and then it obviously failed to install and WU kept reminding me everday to install it......but this tool killed it.

You're welcome...........

My world isn't falling apart because I don't use Win 10.  In fact, I'm doing quite well without it.... the sky ain't falling, my PC works as I want/need it to with Win 8.1... and my tinfoil hat keeps me safe from prying eyes and sticky beaks.

So yeah, I feel quite normal and relaxed.

The same could be said of a rattle snake.... but I wouldn't advise playing with one to find out.

As they say, though, each to his/her own.  Plenty of people didn't like Win 8 - 8.1.  I did and will continue to use it until support ends.

Since there are multiple pages this is going to cause multiple threads at the same time.

Quoting RedneckDude,

I did upgrade, rollback, then fresh install to dual boot with Windows 8.1. Easy as falling off a curb.

One rig I just upgraded from 8.1, then just clean installed 10. No dual boot. I have one rig triple booted 7, 8.1, and 10.
Windows 7 other than the registry problems was as good as it gets interface wise. It was as user friendly as possible. Thanks to vista we have to deal with everyone hijacking the registry. Now with eight it doesn't make since that you would like it unless you are a kid. Doing away with the start menu in eight was a bad idea unless you actually put all your items on the desktop which makes no sense you only put on the desktop what you regularly used. Even offering to put it back with an external program doesn't make sense why get rid of DOS if all you were going to do is make using a computer harder not easier anyways. My guess they are trying to do away with the demographic of non computer users who needs those guys learning how to use a computer anyways! Just kidding of course! That thingy on the side on the screen only did a fraction of what the control panel did. I actually never used user accounts before eight. I was experimenting with libraries at that point. Computer with a back space while having multiple versions open at the same time was better thanks to block copy.  Maybe if I new about the Microsoft x key sooner things would have been different.

Again back to what make sense every time I turn on my computer I can't do anything also, what does that thing do that says start. Logically that must not mean to start doing the computer thing. What your telling me that start means to start using my computer gosh how did you figure that out I wish things weren't so difficult. All these things on the desktop are there for posterity I mean they don't do oh wait when I click on them they work. Let's go click start can you help me I can't figure out how to use the computer I need help since I know clicking on help wont do anything. Seven is idiot proof as far as compatible. By the way no one taught my dad he learned from help.

Now with eight they didn't quit get rid of the start menu they just hid it so no one could find it. So now there was no using the desktop if you had no experience. Now I'm going to regress a little. The reason the cell phones didn't have the desktop wasn't because of lack of superiority of it, it was because the screen was to small. I do appreciate the common sense there. Never once did I look at a cell phone, and wished that the computer did that instead of having a desktop not even for a second. Have the interface changed on cell phones no other than maybe improvements on the same concept do I want them to no they are to small. Now eight tried to do that to the computer where on a 17 1/2" screen you put these huge gawky buttons on a computer because we are very blind right instead of icons. They hid the desktop just incase I tried not to be so blind and used a computer like interface.

When I finally found the desktop it was a lot less user friends. First it was obvious that they didn't want computer users to use it anymore with the lack of a start button. The lack of a start button meant that there was no more just clicking on a list of programs to start; or putting icons on the desktop. At this point it was time to start firing people! Whoever came up with this concept? Now lets get some Pr. on this Microsoft announced that they were consolidating operating systems for the obvious reason to save money. Remember all I got to do is sell this to kids because there are more of them, not to anyone who knows what they are doing which there are fewer of them. To sell to kids for the  most part you tell them what they want. To sell to others you have to be more practical because they know what works, and what doesn't. Is a phone, and a computer the same thing not they aren't. A phone doesn't have a mouse, and keyboard a computer does. Is the screen so small on a computer you can't fit anything? Smart phones, and scroll which is hands down inferior to the mouse. For some reason virtual keyboards don't work. If you want to have only one operating system maybe it's time to stop making phones, and tablets, and leave it up to the experts instead of messing up computers. Also why do you keep changing names. Another problem with eight is that you messed up the task manager why? A program essentially runs something that doesn't mess up your computer. Like turning it off, A process is a program that controls functionality of stuff they should not be together.

Now in ten they brought back the start menu, renamed a lot of things. Programs are called apps. Blurring the difference between apps(mini programs), and programs. It's alright, but pointless to move the user interface to the start menu when they should just get rid of it. There is no purpose for it on the computer. It doesn't bother me not calling the start menu the start menu just it isn't so obvious where to start for the non computer illiterates. Still need to fix the registry problem though.  Windows is flopping with every other operating system, so I probably should just skip 11. Also remember the recommended time to wait to buy new inventions is one year after it comes out.

Quoting Leo the Lion,

Fuzz.........You can fix the start meno with Start10.

What's the start menu problem other than it doesn't have the control panel, or it might be a little easier to have the old computer instead of file explorer back.

Quoting TheDude23112,

Quoting RedneckDude,

Or more importantly why did you keep windows 8.

Quoting Fuzzy Logic,

I have that already. Makes it look better but it still hase the W7/Vista clickfest menus.

What I do is change the folder permissions on the 'Programs' folder. Then I add it to the taskbar - right click the taskbar, select toolbar > new toolbar and browse to the programs folder.

You then have a fly-out menu just like XP's start menu
I change my mouse to a single click in the mouse settings other than that I like to be able to go to and click on things don't know hot keys. Please keep the user friendliest of the desktop don't remove that. While keeping the menus you can add hotkeys. Don't get rid of menus. Just to add to this it is easier for the computer illiterates to have menus vs. hotkeys. It is not easier for computer illiterates to not be able to do things with your computer unless you have a million dollars.

Quoting Kazzerigian,

Win10 compatibility issues for hardware over two years old or so is still a very real problem. Anything issued on Win8 is likely AOK. Anything that started on Win7, let alone XP or Vista back in the day, has a lot of potential issues based on mfr support and, barring any of that, Microsoft's debugged and compatible replacement drivers (no, that's not a joke about mutual exclusivity - or maybe it is). Most PC mfrs are recommending their users do NOT upgrade - at least yet.

For now, anyone who started on an older OS, I would suggest trying a dual boot with another partition or HD/SSD to do testing, etc.

Just my $.02!
So on my old desktop when I get it back I should keep isomg windows 7.

Dual, Triple boot, nah. You guys have recognized that Hyper-V ist built in since 8 ?
I've tried to use a virtual machine a couple if times I think I need a version of windows other than what comes with the computer. I think it would not ruin the computer if a virus infects a virtual machine. Otherwise Linux's free programs index would be a nice addition since windows free programs are bogus.

128 is a bit small. I have a 256 GB SSD on this lappy and I still have to be careful not to install to much crap.
My main concern is the 10 thousand read/write limit. The recommendation for SSD's are that you only port programs that don't do a lot of read/writing. I haven't got around to getting a SSD plan to eventually do it probably will be looking for my cheapest one.
Quoting killswitch469,

Quoting Heavenfall,

There's not really any big deal surrounding hardware or software issues with win10. The issues that have been focused on so far is privacy - you literally cannot turn off sending data to MS. And to a lesser degree the unclear revenue stream for MS because they gave it away for free to most people. (Those issues are probably connected, obviously). There's a vocal group on these forums that take these issues seriously. But if your question is just "does it work?" then the answer is pretty much yes.

There shouldn't be any reason to be unclear about the revenue stream. Yes MS gave Windows 10 upgrades away for free, but only to people running Windows 7, 8 and 8.1. If you had Vista or XP then you were out of luck. If you had Linux or OSX, then you didn't get it for free.

Android, iOS and some form of yet to be deployed cloud computing (wirelessly attach a keyboard, mouse and monitor/tv/vr display to your cloud watch and then it streams everything to the servers, including 4k/8k games) are threats to windows in the future. However, older versions of windows are the biggest current obstacles for Microsoft moving forward and innovating so it can compete with those other platforms. According to the July 2014 Steam Survey, Windows 7 64 bit was on 49.92% of Steam computers, and this is two years after Windows 8 had came out.

Even with the October 2015 Steam Survey you get

Windows 7 64bit - 36.67%

Windows 7 32bit - 8.19%

Windows XP 32bit - 2.26%

Despite the free upgrade and Microsoft pushing hard windows 10 64bit is only 26.42% (windows 10 32bit is 1%)

It will only help Microsoft by upgrading every possible computer to windows 10, especially when it can help leverage its windows 10 user base to get developers to create Windows 10 universal Apps which will run on PCs Windows 10 phones and even the Xbox One. Just this week, windows 10 had it's fall upgrade, the Xbox One upgraded to the New Xbox One Experience, which means a new UI and Windows 10 on the Xbox (giving MS another 10+ million windows 10 devices) and Windows 10 mobile will launch in the next month. I think Microsoft gave up between 500 million to 2 billion in upgrade revenue to push the windows ecosystem forward.

Though Microsoft also shot itself in the foot with the privacy options and lack of update notes. I use Windows 10 and think it is a better OS than 8.1 or 7 and I get what Microsoft is trying to do, but they really hurt themselves with those two things. Besides those two complains all I hear is that some older hardware may give people trouble and then the media center faithful are highly upset about not having an upgrade path on windows 10.
Microsoft is out of touch with it's consumers when they don't adhere to it's consumers with not supporting older hardware. Windows had that what happened. The answer is probably that it is more profitable to make everyone upgrade to the new operating. That is why it is illegal to sell used operating system's if you don't believe me ask Bob Bookman's. That is also why they obsolete operating systems in the first place. I mean how important would it be to upgrade your operating system if it ran all of your programs. Not supporting XP doesn't make sense considering that XP service pack three came out the same year 7 came out, but if your computer is running fine there is no reason to upgrade your computer unless you have eight. Give the new operating system one year after it comes out it probably be fine. That is the recommended time to wait for new inventions to work out bugs. I'm already recommending not buying 11 because Microsoft flop every other operating system (99,2000,Me,vista,8).
Quoting Kazzerigian,

Quoting RedneckDude,

Why would that be illegal?

According to what you said, that Win10 does not replace your old key and the old key is still usable, there is nothing illegal about retaining the original Winx partition and dual-booting to the new Win10 partition. I haven't had anyone clarify that for me before. So thanks!
You know this is hearsay have you checked out your information. You really don't know until you check it out for yourself. Also he didn't say. He is actually asking you a question.

Thing is, it is summer in the land down-under right now, and showering twice a day isn't unheard of, particularly when it's humid and temps get into the high 30s, low 40s C, as they have been of late.  As for the early aging, I'm 63 next May and I'm not too concerned with the appearance of my skin.  Most people are disbelieving when I tell them how old I am.... "but you really look so much younger!"

As for Win 10, extended use over time causes premature aging, tonsilitis, gingivitis, baldness, herpes and warts.

and SOME parts of aussie even get into the HIGH 40's low 50's, THEN you do not waste time showering, you create a LARGE very DEEEEP hole, fill it with water (and rig a pump and pipe to get the COLD water at the bottom of the hole and pump it up onto a small (around 10000 litre) tank in ground level, and when you want to cool off, jump in the small tank(the water should be only15-20 degrees, ie COLD for an air temp of 45+) and when the tank gets too warm, then drain it back into the big hole, and pump up a new lot of cold water

Nice starkers, you can try:

1) chose your  favorite package management systems ( strongly suggest rpm or deb)

3) Text the following DE`s MATE, Cinnamon, XFCE, KDE and also these WM `s pekwm icewm openbox.

4) Try wps office , libreoffice, calligra, gnumeric, abiword as office alternatives.

5) Start skinning in gtk2 + gtk3 or qt/kde5. Without gui but with highlight text editor gedit or kate.

Sounds easy but yeah would take you  at least 2 years. Thats why i do recommend you staying on windows 7 or 8.1. If you have question about linux ask on the existing forums in your native language. Skinning in  gtk is difficult and qt even more ( but in qt you can define everything with nice  color shemes very easily -/ but fine tweaking is easier in gtk based systems).

just to show a custom a gtk theme setup , note much more difficult as in skinstudio.

i just realised something yesterday... emet 5.2 isn't fully compatible with win10 (look.. i didn't read the thing properly before installing it)

noticed it when i was wondering why ie doesn't open (i was checking some ie settings... since things like steam likes using ie settings for some reason... i think.)... ie in win10 crashes apparently if eaf is enabled.

maybe it's also why i can't uninstall asus ai suite (can't be bothered to boot into safe mode to give it another try).. i have emet options toggled to all green.. (forgot which is which.. just means it's a bit less compatible with everything and can cause crashes)

aside from that.. i guess things seems to be ok with win10 so far.. aside from that 1 weird nvidia driver crash +recovery whilst playing swtor.. (haven't bothered played it since..) . which win10 labels as a hardware failure.. (eh? new machine). assassin's creed syndicate (got it "free" with the gfx card) worked fine and i doubt swtor is more demanding gfx wise.. so a driver problem from the looks of it.. maybe emet too

anyway... no serious issue with emet... not like i really use ie. (edge seems to work fine.. not that i use it.). come to think of it. i don't use most of the stuff in win10. just mostly the programs i install. i don't even really use the start menu, let alone the tiles.

ps.. i use local account...  with lots of tracking stuff toggled off (via settings only.. .can't be bothered with registry/group policy) .. as the chinese (cantonese?) saying goes.. what you can't see...  is clean..
