Well, I just gave this a quick shot. Don't often do scenarios so was good to start on them. I don't normally do Sub but I put it on the harder difficulty. I have to say it is a slog and a half, I haven't finished yet. If I were to base everything on this scenario alone I would say Subs ability to take down defended positions was pathetic. You have to build a lot of the anti-building T2 unit, the Destructor to take them down. Without them you won't take them down without massive losses. On the difficulty I was on the enemy upgrade things a lot too, to the point where some buildings were surviving a nuclear attack. So you need two engineers just pumping out Quanta buildings (not assisting each other, building separately) and upgrading your units a lot too to keep up.
I spread fast left and right at the beginning and have been attacking both sides. I don't recommend that though (more on that in a sec). Spread fast left and right and upgrade your economy totally, with amplifiers and boosts. I got a bit lazy going round doing the boosts but you should be able to support 8 factories pumping out stuff fine and one dread factory. I should have built two of them. If I were to do this again I would spread fast like before but when I got to the ends I would just re-enforce one end heavily, to just hold the line, and focus my attack down the other end. Much less micro and much more focused. You do have to build nullifiers along the attack path, and that is indeed a pain.
From my experience I would say:
- This game really needs a mobile nullifier badly, especially when facing suped up AI.
- Substrate needs better attack on defence structures . Apart from improving the Destuctor a bit (as discussed by many good players elsewhere) I kinda feel one of their T1 units could be made a bit better against buildings too.
I've started to build a fleet of bombers in my game. If I finish it I'll build up a strong force of them, fly around the edge of the map and try and take out the HQ. I will need a lot of them I think and with tons of points in unit upgrades. Not the most fun way but as I said, its been a bit of a slog. I'm sure a good Sub player could do a lot better though.
Edit: Alternatively, perhaps I have too many factories, get a few more Dread factories up instead, at least they survive nukes.
