EDIT: Hmm - I was replying to a post asking for locked in Ideologies...thought I hit reply. Anyway that is the context of this post.
I really like that you can pick from all three. In some cases I play races - humans for example - as pragmtic with good tendencies. A majority of pragmatic with some good ideology.
From a more utilitarian stand point I always want to do an Influence Voctory when playing the Krynn and the only real chance of pulling off that is by having the Krynn deliberatly dip into the influence line of ideology.
The dipping is not really a problem so far as I can tell. If you hate dipping when you play it don't do it. Heck I won't do it if I'm playing Torians because the Toriansare saints in my mind.
What I would actually like to see is a more nounced diplomacy system - so that the AI actually recognizes the difference between pure Pragmatic and Pragmatic with good tendencies. In other words the Alterians might actually ally with the Humans if the Humans are Pragmatic leaning Good and slowly get ever more angry with say the Irridium if you play them as Pragmatic leaning Evil.
Same story with the Prgmatic races in general. Eventually the Humans and the Irridiummight find their relations at least slightly frayed if one is Prgamatic leaninmg Good and the other is Pragmatic leaning Evil.
Ultimately I think the diplomacy penalties should increase as the races move further apart on the ideology track. Currently it seems like everyone always hates everyone else at game start but then everyone gets diplomacy bonuses and peace breaks out. I'd think that maybe the game should lean the other way. Early one when races are not really deep in any ideology the differences are much more minor but eventually the gulf will be to huge and deep hatred is (almost) inevitable.
