Nintendo Revolution Controller

I'm not sure about this.

"In his keynote address Friday at the Tokyo Game Show, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata took the wraps off a complete redesigned wireless controller for the company's forthcoming Revolution game console. The controller works like a remote control in one hand, with an optional analog unit for two-handed gameplay."

That's gonna take some getting used to. It really isn't different from actual arcade games but I already have trouble finding one controller , nevermind 2.

Nintendo has always seemed to enjoy defying the common wisdom of controller design. The N64 controller is a great example of something that seemingly came out of left field, a lot of people complained about it, but it worked amazingly well. The GameCube controller seemed to be an attempt to jump from the N64 to something more conventional, and I honestly think it failed... hate that controller and the button layout.

Will the new two-handed dohickey work? I have no idea really. What it does open us up for are some very interesting game input possibilities. Put a gyroscope in one and you could have a lightsaber dueling game where you swing the blade around etc...

Though I'm not sure I'm coordinated enough to use one controller per hand when they're not connected... For some reason it just seems more difficult.

Aside from that, two hands? What the hell? Sounds overly complex. Isn't the point of video games that average folks can have wild adventures vicariously without complexity or difficulty?

If it's going to be hard to use, you might as well run around actually killing real Nazis or aliens, leaping over real buildings, battling real super villains, racing real street cars, or digging up real buried treasure or what have you, right?

I dunno, with it tethered together it looks suspiciously like a "marital aid" I saw in a movie once. Not that I would rent that kind of a movie, mind you, it was, uh, just on at, uh, a friends house... yeah.

Actually it has been referred to seeming like Numchucks lol.
I think its a very interseting design, though I was taken aback at first. Once I read more about it and saw the video I was really hooked. I think it will allow people like me who suck at games to do better, of course only time and use of it will tell that for sure. I could just suck anyway lol.

oh man - i couldn't play a racing game like that lol i have a bad tendency of moving around too much and would probably snap that cord but it is definitely cool in design in my book but, we already use 2 hands on one controller anyways - i think they are just expanding on this idea - hm maybe if i can use my DS as a controller.....

I like their controller, and mostly their games better. However, relative to the other systems, their graphics SUCK.
Maybe that'll be fixed with the PS3.

I was somewhat floored when I saw screens of it today. I really have no comment ether good or bad about it. Ether way Nintendo is deffinty going to turn some heads when the revolution is released.

Although I originally wasn't too sure about this design, after reading a few articles (such as the one on 1up.com) and watching the video on ign.com, I have to say I think this will work really well. Especially with FPSs, it will revolutionise the way FPSs are played. No question about it.

The review of it at 1up.com (Link) does make it sound quite promising - certainly something to pay attention to.

This is something I found interesting in that review.

"Nintendo also mentioned that the controller stick could be slipped inside other, more conventional controller shells, dance mats, bongos, or other peripherals.'

My thoughts: It's totally gay.

I asked my husband, and avid gamer, what he thought. He said, "Gayest game controller. EVER."

On G4 they said that it was supposed to appeal to the casual gamer who would be more comfortable with a remote. Yeah. Sure. The way you use it counters the way everyone in the entire world is used to using a game controller. It looks unwieldy.

And who wants to do something active while they're playing a video game? If you want to move around, go play basketball or some other active sport.

And picture a pasty dork sitting on his couch making sword swishing motions...

I'm really going to have to get used to that. Can't really judge how and if it works until I've played some games with it myself. But bloody hell, not battery powered... Argh...

I still fail to see how your supposed to use the thing. I see a D pad and other buttons. How are you supposed to use the d pad and a action button at he same time using your thumb?

I think it would be bad for deaf gamers. Analog on a separate part attached by wire? We communicate by hands, and would have to let it go to talk, then pick it up. Yay what fun.

I hope there will be alternate controllers by Nes or other companies.
