Ok so anyway. I was reading it and at the end when you no all is lost.. and you are just waiting to go down in a blaze of glory.. it is at that point that I like to throw in some cheats.. make an amazing comeback, and stick it to the guy that was beating me

So it just made me wonder... will there be cheats for the game?

I believe there are cheat codes, yes. Dig around here, I know someone of importance mentioned a flag for running the galciv.exe to run it in cheat mode. Whether or not they'll tell us what the cheat codes associated with that are, on the other hand...

I don't think there would be cheats allowed since it would affect anything you might do in the metaverse. Too bad, I know how you feel if your about to be anihilated anyhow...

Ok, after seeing post 2, maybe there will be.

I beleive there are certain criteria that have to be met for a game to be submitted to the metaverse... I doubt they would put in cheats or anything of that nature and then allow you to submit your score. im 99.99% sure that cheating in a game will automatically make your game un-submitable

That would be my understanding as well... they've talked about how any game intended to be submitted the Metaverse uses a protected set of data files (you have to select Metaverse from the game menu to play a submittable game) - meaning you can't use mods with those games, or anything. I would think cheats would be even more verboten than mods in such a situation.

In gal civ one, cheat code use just zero'd the score. So you could use em, but it wouldnt unbalance the metaverse. Who is going to submit a big fat zero score. My guess is that use of cheat codes will do the same here in gal civ 2.

You can always 'edit' your custom race. You couldn't submit a game to metaverse that way but you can still lob on some bonuses. Or jack around with custom planets and up the PQ.

As I recall, you can run the game with a cheat flag and thus enable cheat mode. You wont be able to submit your games to the Metaverse though.

On the subject of cheats, how will the game know you're cheating if you don't use the cheatmode? Couldn't you edit the memoryvalues to give yourself more money, fast research etc, and thus manipulate the metaverse? In effect, couldn't a "trainer" program catapult you to the #1 position in no time? Hope not. Is there some way to detect this kind of manipulation?

Brad said that you will be able to run cheats in the game by running a parameter "-cheats" in Run.

Example..."C:\Program Files\Stardock\Galactic Civilizations 2\galcivII.exe -cheats"

It probably will automatically disable all forms of Metaverse gaming. Hope that helped.

If you simply set the 'cheats' command line parameter, you'll still be able to play and submit Metaverse games as long as you don't use any cheats.  If you use any cheats during a game, that game won't be counted if you submit it to the Metaverse.  And, as others have pointed out here, if one violates the sanctity of the Metaverse data set, games played with that altered data set will not be counted when submitted to the Metaverse (and you may not even be informed of that happening).  Therefore, you shouldn't mess around with any files contained in folders with 'metaverse' in their names.

And, no, I'm not going to tell you what any of the cheats are.

In regard to memory protection, if the Stardock guys have done a good job, any attempt to alter memory allocated to the game will cause a crash or an error.

Alright, could you shed some light on how the cheats work then? Is it a command console, or cheatkeys?

Hopefully, though it didn't in the beta

I knew it! Oh well. We'll just all start e-mailing Brad .wav files of us mispronouncing "Drengin" over and over again until he breaks and spills the beans.

Just tried to add -cheats to the end of the command line, and doesn't seem to work.

Keep in mind...  Any Metaverse game played will Cheat codes will not be counted towards your Metaverse score.

Right, understood. Though I can't seem to get the command line to take with editting it to

"C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\GalCiv2.exe -cheats"

as recommended. Any pointers on how to correct it would be most appreciated.

What kind of cheats do you want?
All kinds. Particularly those adding money, completing research early, that sort of thing.

Anything would be most helpful.

If you want to enable cheats, you have to add the "cheat" command line parameter (note: that's 'cheat' [singular], not 'cheats' [plural]) to a shortcut to the application and you need to add it *outside* the quotes that enclose the application path in the shortcut.

For example: "C:\Program Files\Stardock\TotalGaming\GalCiv2\galciv2.exe" cheat

Hi Caret Farmer,

I did what you sugggested, now all we need to know are the cheats, such as, add more money, speed up research and so on.

Please do tell!

I see... and what kind of cheats can we use?
Oh, goodie. Seems as if some of the old cheats from GalCiv still work.
