How is the victory condition determined ?

I just lost a game oddly, it seemed to me that I controlled the galaxy, planets of other races regulary rebelled against their dictators and joined my empire, my population, tech, manufacturing, military strength was by far the most advanced in the galaxy, at least according to the graphs. Acutally there was nothing much left over from the former enemies. Then suddenly the end screen popped up telling me that I was wiped out and defeated ?
Do the AI's cheat in this way when they see that they can't win a game ? I do remember my little brother who when playing chess against me wiped off the board right before I could set him check mate. It's nice to find the same human behaviour in the AI's, but hey, they are a computer right, no emotions allowed, beside my own ones, or do I face HAL from Space Odysee ?

Cheers,

TT

There are currently five different victory conditions, any of which could come into play at any time.

From the description you gave though, it sounds like you did win. The code for cultural victory doesn't work correctly, and as a result the game thinks you lost by conquest if any race gets a cutural win.
