Desktop disappears after applying new icon package

I do hope somebody could explain me what happens. I am running IconPackager 3.10 on WinXP SP2, when I try to load and apply a new Icon package like Apogee or even the old ones, all the items on my desktop disappear, just keep the open windows, there is even no response to start system, the computer is not hung up as I can open applications through the task manager. The icon packager is indeed applied as when I restart the computer the new icons are there, but it is annoying to have to restart the computer each time I change icons. Any help welcome.
