Lots of help required - Taskbar

I am attempting to create a semi-transparent taskbar object and having a lot of difficulties...
Things I have tried:
1.) Transparent alpha layers through The Gimp.
- Yeilded Tasks that I could not read. The task became transparent like the backround even thought the object was sent to 100% Opacity.
2.) Transparentcy through "Magic Pink":
- No go, for some reason I ended up with a hot pink tool bar. Desktop X made nothing transparent...
3.) Alpha Transparency through gimp with background images for the tasks:
- This seemed to yeild the most promising results, but still no go. I get the background of the image to show up, but for some reason the tasks and, what should be, the task backgrounds are 100% transparent and I get "holes" where the task should be...
Help?!?
Am I missing something?
An option to set or the like?
