Utah has passed a new law that takes gaming to a whole new level. Utah HB 257, which passed through the state's House of Representatives by vote of 56 to 8, would label violent games as "material harmful to minors," a category which includes pornography.
If it were to become law it would be illegal to show, give or sell anyone a game which was marked as having too much violence. The law was originally to be applied to all forms of media including movies and music but was modified after it failed to make it out of committee.
If the bill followed the same penalties as current law the offender would be charged with a third-degree felony, the first punishment being a $300 fine and 14-days in prison. Another conviction would cause a $5,000 fine and at least a year in prison.
Looks like the game industry needs a lobby group as strong as music and movies...
