Ideas for Improving Diplomacy

One little thing that has frustrated me a little bit has been the lack of options when dealing with the other races. One example that strikes me right off the bat is what happened during a small game I played. I was on friendly terms with everyone for the most part and was going for a cultural win. The altarans called me up once and told me that they were rather concerned about a cultural starbase near their system. They said they did not expect me to move it quite yet, but that they were concerned about it.

My question is this: Why can I not do stuff like that? I would love the option to make a stance on a particular starbase. Maybe its a threatening letter with an ultimatum to remove a particular starbase, or whatever (a request to remove ships from our 'airspace' of cultural influence.. etc). I would really like to see diplomacy opened up a lot more.

Threats, begging for mercy.. and everything in between would go a long way to expanding the scope of the game. I know this is not something for right now, but hopefully down the road this could be looked at as a cool way to increase the life and fun of Gal Civ 2.

Third - was wondering the same thing. Also, I can request they hand me some cash or a tech, but there is no way to truly threaten them. Additional options like you mentioned above, with the threat of war, would add a lot of additional strategy as well as flavor.

I would like the ability to request Surrender. Maybe it could trigger whatever routine it is that the AI checks before it surrenders on its own. Sometimes when you are so much more powerful, it would be nice to be able to call an end to the game.

ya, and I also liked an option like: "dudes, do this or that or give me stuff or its time for war". or a simple "declare war on you" option in the diplomacy screen. having to do a first strike to have war is kinda cheap. ^^

This could also give way to the 'points' toward a particular factioin. Attacking someone before declaring war = evil points. 1 Turn warning = neutral. 2+ turns warning = good.. etc. Lots of places to go with Diplomacy
