BETA 3-Z1 now out

Okay, because people were concerned with the AI being too hard (basically because it was still using the old tech tree) I made a few small tweaks that should make it easier (it uses an updated tech tree).

Specific changes:

1) Race's morality is taken into account before asking for tribute.

2) Race's raw military power taken into account before tribute requests.

3) AI more wary of purchashing things that have a lease cost (that's how it was building constructors).

4) AI follows tech tree path closer. (We're re-doing this system which is why this part hadn't been touched).

So Brad,

How much of the programming do you do? I have this vision of you sitting there all last night cranking out a new versions :)

A very small percentage of the overall programmming but a large percentage of the gameplay affecting code.

BTW, do the tweaks make the game pacing feel better?

A lot of effort has been put into trying to make the pace of the game feel good. Techs are much cheaper for instance.

Brad, I always have to wait a while before answering these questions. I find that what I see and feel at the begining of a game fails to carry through to the end. Right now I am feeling that the game is starting out a little slow, but it is just now beginning to pick up speed.

More on this later.

Pacing is better, I think the techs might be too cheap now though. I finished a medium map game and had the tree finished (well, one or 2 left.) However, a lot of my tech I got through espionage. I think the AI's and player should be able to invest in anti-espionage. I was investing about 100bc into espionage against my primary opponent and got a tech every turn or 2 from him.

Brad, I'll get crazy! ;)
I was ready to submit comments on 3Z and you throw out 3Z-1... Unfair LOL

A lot of improvements and two major "complains":
- AI should not know where good planets are. It's a huge advantage. I know there are AI coding problems involved.
- I'd like to be able to "tell" AI to join me or be destroyed. This is not feasible with the current give-and-take logic.

Gherardo, the premise of the game is that the AI's know where all the good planets are. So it's unlikely Brad will chnage that. However, what would be nice is the opportunity for an alien species to sell you a map of the galaxy. (I can't keep from thinking about Mr. Haney from Green Acres, though!)

Or at least we should know the spectral calss of each star, so he hav a better idea where to look for good planets.. I mean We know the spectral class of everystar we can view in the sky anyways. (I know its only a game ;} ANd that is a little late to program that)
