AI intelligence

I played 2 partial games in a huge galaxy. I found that setting AI to either Average or Smart made no difference as neither built colony ships. In both games, I've colonized over 50 star systems while most AI have 1 - 5 systems (with suitable planets in adjacent sectors). In the average game, I found and colonized 5 class 26 planets, 2 of them near AI homeworlds (other side of galaxy from Earth).

Yeah, I've played them average and smart on normal difficulty - last game the Torians strangely enough ended up ruling 3/4 of the galaxy, but the other civs seemed stagnated. I was number 2, but the other civs had only 3 or 4 planets each, while I was colonizing planets pretty near some of them. Isn't there a "planet rush" early on as everyone should be seeking to find all the habitable planets ASAP?

Well, duh! Average shouldn't mean they ignore planets close to them. That should be standard practice - race to colonize the planets close to you. I'd expect something like that on Easy, not Average. That's not a helpful suggestion, IMO. I'm trying to make the game better in my eyes.

I'll have to check on this but I haven't seen this kind of problem.

I saw something simmilar. Altarian on smart. I found a system with a class 26, 19,18, Right next to a colonised Altarian system, in same sector.

1. I have never been able to find a class 26 unless it was near my home planet, as the AI always got there first, and this was right at the edge of my area of influence about the last planet I could colonise.

2 It could be said that the AI was building a colony ship But surley that would have been the first in the sector to be colonised.

3 The altarians already had lots of spare colony ships. As I saw them when I bought a load of freighters from them.

Anyway just a thought.

Brad, I emailed you two saved games about this on Saturday. I initially thought it was a bug and the AI couldn't expand past 5 colonies.

Later in the game they did expand a LITTLE. But I was able to expand all the way across the map in that time.

It seems very hit and miss. My last game all the AIs were doing what I thought they should be - a couple of them even colonized some planets right out from under me before I could get there :) But some games they don't - it's the other way around.

ok, i changes all AI to Genius and playes for 4 hours and gave up. The was way ahead of me tech and military. Their economies were better as they had more planets and starbases. I'm back in an all Smart game and they seem brain dead. There is a big difference between Average/Smart and Genius.
I dont know anything about AI programming but Average & Smart needs improvement. They are brain-dead.

Suggestion: Take the Genius code and use it for Smart and Average, but handicap the production, research, economic bonuses: -10 for Smart and -20 for Average.
