By replacing the snowflake images of the object below with "rain images" and changing the speed you might make some rain.

But to make realistic rain you would need lots of drops. I wouldn't want to take tne memory hit for that.

It would be cool if natural desktop had the option to invoke weather conditions on the desktop. I would love if my desktop was foggy in the morning.

that's how I always envisioned natural desktop. I'd love rain, snow and fog on the entire screen. One thing I've always wanted was a single photorealistic wallpaper that gradually went from night to day and changed seasons and everything. Natural Desktop is a great start, but that kinda evolution to the concept would be awesome

Take a look at Aladdin's Sundial (discontinued) : ftp://ftp.aladdinsys.com/pub/_old/pc/Sundial/SUDIAL30.EXE

I thought it was really cool.

Sundial is more than a screen saver: it provides a continuously updating view of the outdoors, right on your desktop. The California Collection lets you choose from 10 famous locations throughout the Golden State. Each location features nearly 300 professionally shot photographs, compiled into a QuickTime movie, which updates your desktop every five minutes. Watch the fog roll lazily in and out of San Francisco Bay. See day turn into night as the moon rises over majestic Mt. Whitney. Follow the subtle color changes at breathtaking Zabriskie Point in Death Valley. It's all here in this beautiful package.

maybe make a weather widget that has the screen show whats going on outside.

If its snowing out, it snows, if its raining, it rains, etc.. Fog would be kewl to see.
Not sure how to do the animations, but the weather scripts are out there.

Sounds like a logical extension to Natural Desktop: http://www.desktopgadgets.com/ViewGadget.aspx?GadgetID=2

Maybe suggest it to Stardock?
