Reinstalled Windows... Problem!

I had to reinstall Windows due to a, er, mistake. Big, bad mistake. It led to my requiring to install Windows (98SE) to a second directory, C:\Windows2, and also all my software (no small task). One piece to go back on was, of course, GalCiv.

But now, its former glory is diminished. No longer can I sweep through the intro sequence with style and panache. No longer do my colony ships plough the celestial sphere with grace. Instead, I get Jerk-O-Vision (TM).

Is my problem related to the reinstall of Windows (I assume it is) and is there any fix available? Incidentally, the problem is less marked on Tiny and Small galaxies.

Please reply before my withdrawal symptoms begin to cause problems,

sounds like a low memory problem. My rig only has 128 meg, and with winblows xp, the game runs jerky. More so on the larger galaxies. Do you have "background loading" on or off? (I have it off for faster loading).

I also noticed Jerk-o-vision is A LOT more pronaounced if you have an alien ship selected instead of one of yours.

Tho I don't understand why you would have to change the windows directory to windows2 :notsure:

Well, panic over. The Expansion Pack seems to have ironed out the issues with memory, so that's not a problem. It just struck me as strange that the reinstall of Windows should coincide with a piece of software going funny (I have also noticed that a lot of my mp3 software is odd, but strangely enough, nothing else). I have backgroud loading off.

Supplementary note: I had to install to Windows2 as I had to reinstall Windows completely from scratch, without removing the old Windows directory. I overwrote a rather important file - as part of a job lot of files, meaning that I couldn't tell which rather important file I had to replace.



Off the memory thing, has there really not been a fix of the bug requiring mp3s to be placed in C:\mp3? It seems like a bit of an issue, and I would like to be able to use my mp3-CDs!

It could have been the sound drivers or codecs causing the jerkiness. Buggy sound codecs can cause crashes and slowdown, and when we were testing on WinME, the drivers caused jerkiness in the binks.  (We knew that it was something to do with the drivers because when we ran GC on the same computer with Win2000 it worked fine.)

I'm not sure what you mean in your question about not being able to use your mp3 cds.

Basically, the problem with mp3s is this. My playlists only play the first file in the list.

I understand that this is something to do with where the mp3s have been stored? Ergo, is there some means of fixing this so that I can play all the playlist, or do I just wait for Christmas and ask for an mp3-CD player? ;)
