Tennessee Trying To Ban Violent Games

Tennessee Senator Tommy Kilby has proposed a new bill that would ban the sale of violent video games in Tennessee to anyone, period. Kilby claims to have the support of parents and law enforcement officials as he plans to push the most extreme piece of gaming legislature to date.
The proposal is targeting games in which violence is targeted towards authority figures, including parents and law enforcement, and acts deemed as sadistic. Any title "including infliction of gratuitous violence upon the victim beyond that necessary to commit the killing, needless mutilation of the victim's body, and helplessness of the victim" would be deemed violent by the bill. An "extremely violent video game" would be "a video game in which the range of options available to a player includes killing, maiming, dismembering, or sexually assaulting an image of a human being."
If passed bill SB3981 would become active as soon as July 1st, and would make the sale or rental of any violent game illegal. The track record of less stringent legislature has been extremely poor, with most being labeled as unconstitutional under first amendment rights. Senator Kilby's bill is likely to fold under the same kind of scrutiny.
