Suggestion for performance improvement

For lower end machines

Please consider this idea in a future patch.

Simply an option to adjust at which level the 3d models turn to icons. The game is very playable on my 1ghz Athlon, 512 Ram Geforce 3 when I am zoomed out to the icon level. But just 1 zoom level closer and the game crawls to 3 - 6 fps, and heres the thing, the ships at that zoom level are too small to see anyway.

So why not be able to change the zoom level at which ships turn to icons? This would greatly enhance performance and you could still zoom in closer if you want to see the details. This would make the game immensely more playable at medium zoom levels. Also since stars and planets seem to have less polygons you could adjust them to shift to icons at farther zoom levels.

This is a great idea for running the game on older computers which actually increases the Gal Civ 2 user base. Please consider. Thanks

You CAN change this actually Click Options -> Interface then one of the sliders says "Tactical View Zoom Level" The default is 25 I think.

EDIT: Re: Your last comment just made me think of the options under the video tab that lets you disable graphical features if you are having performance issues on a low-end rig. It was made available with the latest patch which you should have anyways.

Hah I just went to the IRC channel to suggest this and found out about it. Well it's definately better. I was gonna say I couldn't believe they didn't think about it. Well I'll post more "suggestions" as I think of them.

I was thinking the Nebula background would give enough contrast, maybe they have tried this already and it doesn't work though.

WHy is it that a minor race is getting their butt kicked and then I give them a great bunch of ships to defend themselves, but they dont move them and they dont use them to protect themselves. Its like I didnt even give them to the race.
