Can someone explain morale to me?

I understand it's purpose, but I don't understand how it works in certain situations. For example, playing beta 4, I've got 4 planets colonized, two with very good morale, 70+, a couple around 5-60+, with a Republic govt. Then I colonize one more planet, and boom, everything goes bust. The new planet is at 20+, the others drop probably between 10-20+ points. The next planet I colonize is at 0 morale!
So what the heck is going on? It seems like if I get more than some magic number of planets, everything goes to hell morale wise. I've had this happen a number of times. Everytime I get a population crash which takes forever to recover from because as population drops, it takes longer to produce that morale increasing building to get my morale up to get my population increasing again. Can someone explain?
Also, the better morale is, is production better also. Do people build or research better, or is that independent of morale? Thanks.
