Game Lockup Adding Phase III Factory to Starbase

I was trying to add a phase III factory to an existing starbase, and the game locked up. This was reproducible from a saved game. I let it run for a while, since I did not lose control of Windows. When the screen saver activated, instead of my usual pictures, I got a square box that said "Could not create Direct 3D device".

I was about to get the latest DirectX 9, but first I got all the latest Windows XP updates. Having the latest updates for Windows cured the problem. I would recommend that everyone get the latest updates for their OS.

I've run into this too. I have a saved game that reproduces it and sent it to the team to look at. It's in the ship movement code so I am not sure what causes it.

As far as modules go, when you already have "Basic" and "Advanced Trading Post" and you are updating that starbase with a constructor, a third choice shows up "Trade Center" (I think) which shows as already installed (so you can't choose it), but which of course doesn't show up on the starbase's status screen.

I wonder if this could this be one of those "old file" problems--I've never done a clean re-install, though I have the updated .exe.
