I won for the first time . . . but don't know how! :)

Ok, it appears that I won by cultural influence - at least until I took the last AI homeworld in revenge for their bloody war against me
One moment I looked like I was doomed as a massive Altarian fleet was assaulting my systems - the next thing planets from all 3 remaining races were literally flocking to join my empire - Torians, Yor, Arceans, and Altarians, 3 to 6 systems per turn! Until most were down to less than 3 systems!
Problem is, I don't know what I did to warrant this. I had no starbases, not a whole lot of cultural stuff - a few embassies, an Economic Capital, an Manufacturing Capital, and one Cultural Exchange Center. It was totally unexpected.
Another thing, one turn, my small section of the galaxy was blue on the minimap, with the other empires in their colors, then the next turn, the entire map is blue with my color indicating sector control! And I had AI systems on the opposite side of the galaxy joining up with me - which I thought was the strangest thing. I wouldn't necessarily be surprised by neighbors, but planets across the galaxy from me? That seems a bit much. I should think it should be limited to neighboring sectors.
Anyone else seen anything like this before?
