4AM build in this thread

Okay, I've spent the better part of the afternoon...evening...and morning fixing up some of the reports here.

Here is the result:
http://draginol.stardock.com/temp/galciv.zip

Unzip to your galciv directory.

What's changed:
1) Performance Performance Peformance. Especially late game. Thanks to Pierre for his saved game which is what I worked off of.

2) I have attempted to fix as many of those instances where the turn button doesn't come back.

3) Lots and lots of game flow work. This was tedious to do and probalby only subtle but hopefuly you will find ship battles better animated, and slightly more coherent than before to keep track of.

4) Fog of war fixes. Probably not perfect still but hopefully better.

5) Significantly smarter AI in tactical combat.

6) Several crash bugs that I was able to reproduce.

What's not fixed:

1) That crash problem when the AI demands tribute. I didn't run into it so I wasn't able to try to see what the cause was.

Notes:

I really do need feedback on this. This build has obviously not gone through Stardock's QA process. And worse, as I said elsewhere, my posting may make it seem like I'm the main developer of GalCiv but in fact I have only coded <15% of the game. Cari, Scott, Mike, Eric, Ian, Pat and others have coded plenty on it too and I was messing with all their code.

So it'll be important to know whether this is a definitive improvement or that it's worse. It works here but then again, it's going on 5am so my testing abilities are impaired a bit! :d.

Oh and I increased the # of stars.

oh they gonna kick your ass for releasing a new version without their permission. heh

can some of you finally update the user manual you have on this website? not only it's incomplete, but it also has wrong information, starting from description of government party bonuses
Reply #3 Top
thanks brad, i'll check this out today...will start a game. i ran into the tribute bug twice only a couple of turns later in that autosave game i sent you. but if that's random and not already seeded in the pipeline, then you may not see it. the yor definitely want my rear in that game and you should see it perhaps after a few tries. pierre

Thanks for the update, once again no rest for the Boss.

I guess you can have the award for Chief Galatic Civilizations addict.

I still crash to desktop at random (not reproducable), without getting any error messages like assert failures

PS, got a strange event - not a crash. But when I loaded a old savegame from before the new exe. the following occurred:

1) The right hand side of the main screen was a palette of thin streaks of color - no objects, just streaks of color

2) The game moved in slow motion and responded to my input slowly. It was sort of funny, panels opened frame by frame, ships dragged across the screen. After a few minutes, it cleared up.

I think this is the same crash as above with the new exe. I'm really not doing anything. It's happening during automated ship movement each time.

I'll look into those further. They're ot related to the changes I made though based on where the crashes are.

Master Lame, other than the political parties the user manual is quite up to date.
So any other impressions? Fixing crashes wasn't the main thing I was working on (I an fix crashes that are in my code a lot easier than in other people's).

Grifin:

Okay, one of the crashes seems to be while you were using the hotkeys. The hot key for diplomacy or something.

The other one I'm not sure about, it hsa to do with one of your own ships.
Hmm, funny, I never use hotkeys :) I'm a real mouser - just can't be bothered memorizing those keys.

Hadn't gotten far enough along to see how it holds up late game - I'll let you know when I get there.

When I reloaded from a saved game I
1) lost my speed improvements
2) lost my range improvements (colony ship entered sector but now cant colonized. Was told to power down and hibernate.
3) game crashes to desktop alot

playing evil for a change, losing my shirt no crashes, destabalize is working, didn't work well last game using previous zip. Have 5 USS Scout Fortune. Performance has picked up a lot except seems slower in diplomacy when i;m trading for a lot of their stuff. I think diplomacy has a slight bug, i acquired starhawk technology from 2 civilizations and i am researching it now. Brad we owe you a lot for what you have done this week! I hope you have a great holiday

Ted, I saw the same thing. I was in mid-war with the Torians, and discovered my ships couldn't attack them. However, for me, a turn later I was back in business.

I also lost my hit point bonuses, but starting with the next turn, the shops started repairing again.
Yea, the reason for that is that we don't calculate abilities on the fly anymore but instead just once per turn and store the value which makes things faster.

I put this at the beginning of the turn rather than the end.
how often does auto-save function saves the game?
I suggest to make it every turn, cause you just never know when one of them random crashes gonna hit. And if the save occurs more often, there's bigger chance of reproducing the crash, cause it's easier for player to make exact same moves.
played all day no crash nothing really unusaual in the debug file. the ai's at genius rating starting losing the war were getting badly creamed said that they were sorry but they wouldn't trade peace for peace so i just wiped them out till they surrendered their last planets to me or the yor. By the way why are the ai's so hot for the argenta center when it looks like the embassy does the same because 450 months really puts a crimp in their morale,
Reply #19 Top
'how often does auto-save function saves the game?'

It's adjustable. The setting doesn't display in the UI, but it can be altered in the data/perfs.ini file. Default is 12 turns, I usually change it to 6 or 4 turns.
concerning performance, i had watch autopilot ships on, auto turn on, and while the auto-pilot ships were moving in the main screen, i was looking at my planet list, selecting class, moving the fader bar and the ship movements were very smooth, very fast. I thought you said at some point to look out for disappearing ships. I traded love mushrooms for most of the fleets from 2 ai's and some of the ships were invisible but Ctl-R refreshed them fine
Reply #22 Top
reloaded game and it was fine. I think it loaded wierd
but i started a new game after loading another game and got a ctd just after setting galaxy size and all 5 ai's to genius level.

Actually that is the cause:

Here's what's crashing (And I think I've fixed it here):

Ship leaves orbit in thread A.

Thread B looks at ships that are in orbit of that star at the same time as it's leaving.

BOOM.

The solution is, for now, to have ships leaving orbit only occur in the main thread and not in the background threads. There were quite a number of these. So far today no crashes.
