Still getting Lockups

I am still getting lockups with the latest beta. Some happen right after the SF logo and others happen durring game play. There is no pattern to the lockups. I have run DXDIAG before and after and the one thing I know is that the lockup corrupts DirectX. I am using the latest DX Ver 8.1b for Win98. I have the before and after DXDIAG reports is anyone wants to lock at them.

I'm using end user DX V8.1b for Win98 (US English) d/l directly from Microsoft at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/directx/downloads/drx81.asp

Windows System Control panel says it's a "ESS Solo-1 PCI AuidoDrive (WDM)" from ESS Technologies, Inc. and that the Hardware version is 002. The driver is dated 1-31-2000 (note: this is different date then DxDiag reports) with a file version of 5.0.0.3044.

I have the latest driver according to the mfg (IBM) web site. :)

On IBM PCs be careful about drivers. Sometimes IBM adds modifications that you could undo if you load a driver from the original manufacturer, resulting in mismatches that cause you troubles. You sometimes need to wait for the IBM version of new drivers (or check with IBM support to find out if it is OK to upgrade one from the OEM).

Your welcome. Actually your post was a welcome opportunity to mention the caution. I don't know if this is something that happens with other PC manufacturers or not, but it would be a good idea for anyone to be aware of whether or not the manufacturer of his/her PC does this.

Sometimes it does, but it's not as common as it used to be. My soundcard is a Yamaha OPL-3 based card, but I can't use the most recent OPL-3 driver (although the release just before that does work, and better then the OEM drivers).

Computers from Gateway and other manufacturers that sell sealed case systems that can't be modified frequently require custom drivers as well.
