Google and gMail

Account suspended

On Saturday I tried to access my Google gmail account and got an error that the account was suspended for 24 hours and to stop all contact with the server or the 24 hour period will be extended. I investigated this with Google and they have replied with these findings. I use third-party widgets (1 DesktopX object and 1 DesktopX widget) to access my mail account which is forbidden by their user agreement. I have been notified that if I continue to use the DesktopX widget and object my account will be in violation of the terms and will be closed. This is a crock! I don't know if anybody else has run into this problem with gmail, but I have not performed a search in this forum, so if this has been reported, then I am sorry for a duplicate report, but this is going too far as far as I am concerned and Google may have just googled me to go back to Yahoo.

That's the first I heard of that.

That's odd, I read through both their TOS http://mail.google.com/mail/help/terms_of_use.html and their Program Policies http://www.google.com/mail/help/program_policies.html and couldn't find anything referring to that. I would ask them to show you where, in those documents, is the reference to their claim. If it's such a violation, then their own Gmail Notifier (which is what I use) would be in violation as well.

Said it before and I'll say it again....Google is a law unto itself, and if you don't use their products/software, they'll find a way to force you to: ie, suspend your account, etc.

Just be careful that 'Googling' your way back to Yahoo isn't a violation of your EULA

Hmmm.

They offer (and I use) POP access to their mail system - and I certainly don't use a Google POP mail client.

I don't see how they've got a leg to stand on ?

I'd like to see the original google e-mail to him.

I find this account suspension unlikely to be due to the use of Widgets etc. unless you were abusing their servers with a check every 2 seconds for new mail (or something along those lines). What, specifically, were the widgets you were using?

That's odd, I read through both their TOS Link and their Program Policies Link and couldn't find anything referring to that. I found this in their Program Policies which is what they may have been referring to:

"Modify, adapt, translate, or reverse engineer any portion of the Gmail Service"

Since they have their own gMail notifier then using third-party software may be in violation of this because their gMail notifier is a portion of the Gmail service.

What, specifically, were the widgets you were using?

I use two, one is Omni Mail 2 which I have checking every 10 minutes and the other is an object Dotgmail.dxpack, which doesn't have an option to set the checking. I use the Omni Mail because I can list all 6 of my email accounts in it, and I use the object because it allows you to go to your gmail account without logging in.

I replied to gMail that I had no intentions of stopping use of these and if they were going to suspend my account as threatened because of it to let me know and I'd gladly switch back to YaHELL. I never heard back from them so it was either that the rep that answered my original email had someone piss on their corn-flakes that morning and was blowing smoke and completely out of line.

But it doesn't seem to be a problem, I am continuing to use them and my account hasn't been suspended yet nor locked up like when I first posted this message and it's been around 2 weeks at least.
