USING USER DESIGNED HULLS

I'm sure I must be the only one not to know this but .. is there a way to update a downloaded hull without ugrading and renaming it so that the base hull is still available?

In Beta3 there was a bug that would auto-obsolete designs so you could not save them when upgrading. This is fixed in Beta 3A released yesterday.
