How do I tell maximum population?

How do I tell what a maximum pop for a planet will be? At first I thought it was because I don't have enough farms, but then I noticed that planets with lower ratings seem to have a population cap. Is there a way to figure out about what the pop cap is gonna be? I can't stand taking planets only to find I can only get about 2 billion people there, and they can be taken out easily by a lone troop transport. I'd rather just pass those planets by! Thanks.

Yeah, the maximum population that a planet will GROW to, is determined by the Planet Quality. However, to support those people, you also have to feed them (build farms). The numbers for the max population can be found here:

the maximum number of people is easy
each basic farm provides 4m *blah blah* the only important thing is the 4, 4 *blah blah* units = 4 b people.
Your orginal colony thingy makes 10 food, so 10b people can live on your home planet with out any farms.

In the wikipedia, there's a page that outlines exactly how many farms any quality planet needs to get to its maximum population (which has a hard limit based on planet quality that won't change when more farms are added). The original poster is asking (and I'm curious as well) if there's a way of knowing this *in game* before you plunk down another farm and discover that your population won't increase.

That's pretty confusing and requires a lot of memorizing. The game should show the max population and the needed farms.

your max pop is your food production, simple. It's a 1:1 ratio. 1 food = 1 Billion people.
Planets with over 20B people become very hard to keep happy btw.

I'm surprised at the amount of people who post answers to questions that know less than I do. The blind truly do try and lead the blind. If it wouldn't create flames I'd "preach" on these forums that people should stop answering posts until they've educated themselves first. You see it all over the internet, but this particular community seems to be worse than average. I hate even mentioning it, but good grief, it causes so much confusion here.

Kalin, thank you for the link. Yes, Ari, it would be nice if that figure were to appear in game. A "Max Pop" statistic. It might be deceptive, though, for it to tell you how many farms you need to reach Max Pop because it would not take upgrades or planet resources into account. Besides, billions are easy easy to calculate in this game. Like QRAD said, it's a 1:1 ratio, so you just need to click on your "Summary" and you can figure out from there very easily.
