Needle Freak

Not for the weak stomachs.

He sits in the semi-darkness, rubber tubing around his left arm, tightly wound, veins popping, scarred, tough, sore.

He stares at his fix, inside a glass eyedropper, babies pacifier on top for more push, blunt 23 gauge needle at the ready, he stares again, swearing the needle licked its chops, ready to puncture an already over used vein.

Slowly he pushes the dull spike through the hard as leather skin that covers his tube of life's blood.

Blood rushes into the eyedropper, yes! a fast hit, slowly he jacks the fluid into his vein, a rush encompasses his body, pain recedes to be replaced by SHEER pleasure, he boots in and out, the droppers slowly filling with more blood, thickening, clots form yet he does not stop, needle clogs, he flings the dregs of his fix onto the wall, he watches as the clots slowly drip down the wall. blood drips down his arm in rivulets, onto the carpet, he cares not and makes no move to stop the flow.

He is already thinking about the next fix, swearing to get a new needle, but he knows all he will do is run a thin wire through it to clean the hardened blood, sharpen it as well as he can on the striking part of a matchbook.

For the moment he is at peace, knowing this will pass quickly as the drive for MORE will soon return.

He cleans the blood off his arm, he sits back and lights a smoke, momentarily a feeling of well being allows his to think, thoughts of death.

You did warn us.  But reading about it is ok with me.  Yet the message is loud and clear and graphic.

Very good.

This was one of the hardest things to read (phobia of needles?). Yet this is a colorful writing of somepeople's life. Two thumbs up

This is the most gritty article I have had the pleasure to read. It gave me shudders.

Yes,  And it is painful to look into that picture, but at times necessary.  Thank you for the picture.  As I said, I can read it, and see it, I just cannot be it.

I don't remember when I read something you wrote awhile back. It was last year at some time and you made a passing remark on one of your articles stating you could NOT write. Well I'm here to tell you you were very wrong.

It takes talent to write a short piece where the reader sees so much. A wonderful article.

I second that statement.  You are a very good writer.  And that is why most people read you.

All good writers are passionate.  If they were not, they could not draw the audience in.

It is a shame that this is the case, given most of the political articles on JU are subjective at best (I'm not trying to offend you or anyone who has a passion for politics, just telling as I see it). Politics invokes passion in people and they feel they have to respond, whether they agree or disagree.

I've got to be honest and say this is one of the best pieces I've read from you. It is smart, articulate and concise. Well done.

Wow Elie, I'm just getting to this! Don't ever let the infrequencies comments let you stop writing like this! It was as gritty as it was poignant (ok, same word, which I'm at a loss to describe)! You did paint the picture so real in the readers eyes, almost as if we're there, like a fly on the wall witnessing this.

Thank you for letting us see your 'other side', which you don't show too often (more, more, I say!).
