Need Help

I just dnlded GalCiv Beta from drengin.net. And I'm have a lot of trouble. At the start things going okie as I expand and colonize but after a while everything goes downhill. For some reason my morale goes down the hill. It seems the more colonies I get the less morale I have. Until my population starts declining to nothing. Even building all the morale boosting facilities doesn't seem to work. :(

Can anyone help?

Also where can I find the manual?

Hi Pyromancer,
you can find the manual on the top of the page, under "Encyclopedia" and the "Galciv User Manual"

about the whole morale thing - I've discovered the same myself, but one thing that helps, is to use the tax slider under your empire status. The lower the tax, the happier the people :-)

also, spending points on the "Details" screen from the planetscreen, will help you keep the people happy.

Hope it helps

The latest version of the manual can be found by clicking the 'Encyclopedia' button above.

Pyromancer,
It sounds suspiciously like you are in serious deficit spending if your morale is tanking that badly and that quickly. Keep an eye on your treasury and income. If your treasury goes negative then watch out, if you hit -500 b.c. morale empire wide will go to 1% and stay there.

Magus,
well that doesnt have to be the case - you can check out my post (here http://www.galciv.com/forum.asp?id=13199) and see that I've experienced exactly the same, with 102 BC income and over 2000 in treasury.
I even had my tax set to 0 and still darn populace complained. Perhaps some Nerve-stapling of the population could be included to the evil side? hehe ;p

Also, make sure that you don't colonize planets below class 15 until all the good planets are gone and you have more planet improving technologies.

CariElf,
does planet value has an impact on morale?

Razqon,

We don't have to wait for Cary for this one. Yes, for the same population, the higher the planet class the higher the morale (also, the higher the production and research capability, the higher max population, etc.).

No I don't colonize anything less then 15. And yea I do use the tax slider to help moral but I have to keep lowering it and lowering it until it seems that it's at 0% taxes and my moral is still only like 10-20%.

Also yea there are several times that I get to negative BC but I never let it go below 500. It just like 100-200 below.

I just can't figure out the whole moral thing.

why don't you list all your actions turn by turn, then we can see what you are doing wrong

wow - now there's a time consuming task :-)

-500 is the point of no return a treasury that's negative in the 100-200 range is still enough to hammer your morale.

magnus, he already said that treasury is not a problem

Stardock needs to implement a "replay" feature

No need. He should be able to send his saved game to someone who can take a look and tell him WHY his moral is so low.

maybe it's his build queue. Here's mine:
Entertainment Network
Banking Center
Fusion Power Plant
Habitat Improvment
Soil Enhancement
Research Lab
Manufacturing Center

ML said "magnus, he already said that treasury is not a problem".

But he DID say his treasury was in the -100-200 range, which, as Magnus pointed out, also negatively affects morale, just not as fast.

I was going to say what Jack just did but I'll refrain and just point out that the alias is "magus" note the lack of the letter "n". :)

OOoopppsss. That will teach me to "cut and past" so much. Sorry Magus.

The easiest way to handle it is to somehow send it to a more experienced player here, and let that person/us take a look at your saved game and figure out what's going wrong.

Also, how far along in the game are you?

You should focus building all the Morale improvements you can, as well as the planet quality improvements (soil enhancement and habitat improvement).

And if all else fails, build Transporters and take off the maximum amount of people (1000m), which will increase morale on that planet and you can just leave the transporter floating in space without worrying about their morale.

It's a nice little trick I also use to maximize the amount of population I'm making mid-game by taking as many population away from a planet with morale less than 55. Either I transport them to a planet with higher morale, or build them up to use in a quick conquering mission of a minor race or something like that.

Quite useful.

Also, especially early on you should be able to manage taxes in the range of 40-45% range and still have an average approval of over 50%.

Last thing, your form of government also matters. Pretty early on you should hurry on to the next form of government (it's a communication tech), which is Republic. That helps morale if you already have it under control, but can put you into a really bad position if your morale is already out of control.

Here's my strategy currently:

I keep the population that I initially colonize planets, with the exception of 19 or higher planets, exceptionally small, at about 100 million or less. I have the colonized planets churn out 2 colony ships reducing their number to about 30 million and then switch them to constructors.

Its best to focus early on exploration by going after defelctors and sensors first and then buying 'eyes of the universe'. The trick is to find and harvest the resources first. It is essential to get them to keep your civ in proper balance. I usually try to get them in this order:

Influence(2 at least)
Morale(1 or 2)
Economy(1)
Weapons(1)
Tech(1)

During this period if you leave your tax rate alone your morale should decline to 60-80 over the course of 30 turns or so. I usually start building social improvements at the early-midgame in this order:

soil enhancement
banking center
entertainment network
fusion plant
habitat improvement
manufacturing center
stadium

during this time I trade off building constructors and sending them off to resource building sites. If you don't harvest those resources early you wind up getting too much decline to fight off. The good part of that is if you can get the majority of resources, the other empires have to waste most of their energy building morale boosting resources and contiually play catch up.

Get cold fusion and impulse drives early on and then go after interstellar marketing and buy the two culture boosting wonders. Make sure to find all the minor races first, and early because they have about 4500 credits each and you can trade your techs for about 1500 to each race and keep your spending at 100% for a good 25 turns.

Once the midgame hits, switch your constructors over to frigates and build them to defend your planets, then switch back to boosting your starbases.
