trade / freighter question

in some of the games i play, i'll quickly try to trade a tech or something to the a.i. i need to make friends with first. I'll trade for 1 or 2 freighters, the next turn if i can i will land on one of that ai's planets. When i do it decides where that freaighter came from. I have no ideas why it decides what planet, except in the planet screen it was on the bottom of the display. Does any one have an answer?

probably a random factor, since It's basically impossible to do "realistically".

This is a reported bug. It seems to occur more on the larger galaxies, and someone said it had something to do with how the trade route lenght calculation was impacted by the larger galaxy sizes.

Until we got the larger galaxy sizes, trade routes were always from the planet that built the freighter to the planet (of another civ) to which the freighter was sent. When the bug is fixed I hope it does this again.

then it would go from the yor to the yor since it was bought from them. in that case head for one of your own star systems, that might get confusing

ps. jack i've got something to send you (for all your help LOL ) email me at [email protected]

Which brings me to my question...

I have 3 trade routes. Earth/Sol 4 are my best trading planets. They have Economic Capitol, trade goods, economic structures, etc. However, one of my other planets happen to have manufactured 2 of my 3 freighters. What I'd like to do is alter those 2 routes to they go to Sol instead. As it is now, I have to kill those routes (costing me 2 freighters), build 2 new routes (costing me time and resources), and then send those freighters back to the planets (costing more time). I assume this also cost me some diplomatic power with the 2 races I cut the routes with.

A 're-route tradeship' button on the Trade screen would be nice. Give us a "This route will change after the current shipment" popup would also make sense. Any plans to impliment this?

"then it would go from the yor to the yor since it was bought from them. "

OOOpppsss. I missread the original post. The bug I was talking about is where you built your own freighter in one of the larger galaxies. When I traded another race for a freighter in builds before the increased galaxy sizes the route was assigned to a planet that seemed to produce the optimum trade route. I think this is what it should do now.

"re-route tradeship"? I think this would make trade routes too easy. Trade is supposed to be part of your strategy, so I think the game should require you to plan your trade routes well.

OK, that's a good point about changing the routes Lucky Jack. :)

I DO think that you should get a popup that says "Where would you like this trade route to originate?". That way I can have systems A, B & C all make freighters, but have system A do all the trading.

actually since trade is important, i think having to devote resources to it from a particular planet does make sense. Also another thing has come up. This might have happened since this game i was trying to cause bugs and cheats to come up, but when a planet that i was trading with defected to me, the trade route stayed active, and it was terran to terran, with an income. That doesn't make sense, one of the consequences of cultural submission by an a.i. i think should be the loss of any trading routes you had with that star system. Therefore you might not want them to defect to you (to keep your treasury up) but might want to work towards an alliance with them.

In beta 4C I had a freighter that the game would not allow to conclude a new trade route. I tried moving it to 5 different systems and was unable to move it onto any of them. And I had a trade route available, I was using only 8 of the 9 I could have had. And none of the 5 would have duplicated an already existing trade route. Is there a limit to the number of trade routes that can originate at a given system? That's the only thing I can think of that might have caused it, since this was, I think, my 5th freighter from Earth ...

When the trade routes were working well (before the larger galaxy sizes and the current confusing behavior of the game with trade routes) there could only be one trade routes between any two planets. Other than that, I have never seen any limit from a single source planet or to a single target planet, but I have to admit, I seldom had more than 5 routes in any game.

What it all boils down to is that I think there are problems with the trade route establishment code and I think SD will have to review their code to find them, with the help of the behavior descriptions we give.

'Is there a limit to the number of trade routes that can originate at a given system?'

Not that I know of. I've had six routs running from Sol before (and four, if memory serves, AI routes running to Sol from various AI) at one time.

I have a trade route question: would a longer route give more income?
I could have my planet with the all the economic achievements build all the freighters but its near the middle of my gigantic galaxy. I finally colonized a planet in sector 0,0 and its sending freighters to my ally in sector 0,24. (My first ship has yet to arrive and each turn takes about 45 minutes)

ted

yes it will, the longer the more valuable for one side to the other is about 11bc per turn. To one in the same sector is about 2bc turn

Another factor that affects trade route income is the combined population of the two planets.

Agreed. Have 8 trade routes generating 1294bc/turn. I also feel that establishing 10 long trade routes between 2 distant but populated stars, and placing starbases tweeked on defense and economics in every sector inbetween, will generate tons of cash. Will probable have time after monday's build and retail to try it. Current game (Sept 2197): moral 91%, tax 50%, spend 98%, military expense 9451bc, net income: +78!

love those starbases boosting those trade routes! :D

speaking of starbases, if the production bonuses are cumulative then i think it would be nice on the planet screen, to see what the currrent bosuses are, It might help us in our economic planning.
