A few observations on playability.

First, the AI's SEEM much more agressive in smaller games. I'm sure that's not really what's happening, but it might pay to dumb them down a bit inverse proportion to galaxy size (number of sectors).

The other thing (and I believe someone else noted it) usually at least one of the minor races runs off with all the wonders and tech before I can get around to them.
