Research win halves metaverve score ?

Hmm, I just have played around a bit with my lastest endgame (16x16 sector galaxy, 5xgenius AI) and found to my astonishment that I got 1.4 million points as my score when I destroyed the last remaining race. When I didnt invade the last planet, but waited for a tech-victory I only recieved about 700,000 points.

This looks wrong to me since I have not really done anything different and I even finished the game on the same turn as the game I won by conquest.
