Justify myself

what do I have that I could ransom for the
sins of my life,
what item of worth will save my ass when the
collector comes calling,

will my box of hope be enough to keep me free
of the burning accusations circling like vultures
waiting to pick fresh meat from my dying
bones,

what about the wellspring of good intent that
lurks behind the black ache of my heart and stands
limping in my defense,

what price will I get when I lay my life out
will I get a dollar in the plate as it passes by
a jury of my peers, a coin for every good deed
a fine for each ill intent, in murders alone I am
bankrupt,

and what about all the guilt by association, do I pay
for my part in the collective apathy or do we skate
as a mob in the riot—too many to be caught,

does video count?

the thoughts are numbing and the math is meaningless
living life as a calculator is good for a budget, but it
has no flavor,

so what do I have to justify myself to you--nothing.

I never did.
