Is the only way to protect Planets to have ships in orbit???

Not talking about ground combat.

Only been playing the game for about a week now but it would seem like you should have Tech that allow you to build Planet Def... Also Space Stations in orbit that you could build Def modules on??? Is this in the game??
Are ships in orbit the only Def a planet has????

go for planetary defenses, check out java_scout's tech tree, take some time there, there's a lot of stuff to go through, but as you progress thru the tech tree you can defend, the planet, the star system. Also look for the defensive help from star bases (with you ships in that sector) all of a sudden you might have an extra 7 attack points per ship. Have fun. Are you playing in the small or larger galaxies? The smaller ones are easier to get a handle of how the game works. The gigantic galaxy can take a lot of time 2+ long days. Look out this game is really addictive :D

The answer to the title of your thread is, "to protect your planet from invasion, Yes.". Only ships with transport capabilities can invade planets. The techs, social improvements, galactic resources, and star base upgrades ML mentioned enhance the defensive capabilities of your orbiting ships. But don't expect transports or colony ships to provide you any protection. They are too easily distroyed, even in orbit.
