Why I hate cracker jacks

God is a bartender that's heard it
all and the devil plays guitar in my
kitchen dreaming of the glory days
they both sing like it's all been said
before and life lack surprises, but when
I was seventeen,
the mail came addressed to my long
dead father, hero of the navy, sailor of
the seven seas, man of mystery and
suspicion, conqueror of Japan,
inside a short letter from an attorney
on cream colored paper and a black
micro-fiche document with the Great Seal
of California and the County of Los Angeles,
"Court Ordered Delayed Registration of Birth."
in neon white ink on the black certificate
three form lines below my name it read:
mother-cheiko masuda
father-unknown
I was six foot four with the name Neal
and I was irish and I was All-American
and I didn't like Japanese people,
they had slanty-eyes and wore coke bottle glasses
ate raw fish and smelled funny when they sweat
they bombed pearl harbor and they couldn't be
trusted,
and suddenly, I was one of them.
now you know why I hate Cracker Jacks.
