Altarian Prophecy beta Available to Drengin.net users

Altarian Prophecy beta Available to Drengin.net users

You have to have updated and restarted Stardock Central since yesterday to see the beta.  Check Show Pre-Release Applications and select Check for Application Updates if you aren't seeing it.

Altarian Prophecy will show up as a separate module under Games, and installs into its own directory, but you must have Gal Civ installed (preferably 1.13 but 1.12 might work too).  It works much like the mods directory.

Please note that the save games are not cross-compatible between the expansion pack and 1.13 or earlier versions of Gal Civ.  They no longer create folders; everything is saved in one file.  Altarian Prophecy has its own Data\SaveGames folder.

Bugger! Downloaded it twice, but both times it crashed after saying it was making icons. Still lists it as available to download, but why would it crash as it looks like it finishes installing? Will worry about this come Thursday (my weekend). Thanks folks.

If you got to the point of it crashing when it says creating shortcuts then you probably have it. It crashed for me at that point but I checked and turned out it downloaded completly.

Thank you. Will check Thursday. Took nearly half of today off to recover from whatever virus I caught at work, and am aiming for up to 12 hours of sleep before work tomorrow.

Fugmulch, send me the files that you made and I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

To everyone,

Ok, I think that I got everyone's feedback from this and other notes, and I'll start looking into them.

Just upgraded to drengin.net to get it - lots of cool features, will we be able to use to two new races in the map editor and stuff?

The new races aren't in yet. Neither are the new ships.

Cari,

Any idea when the save/load function will be completed? (Perhaps by this weekend?) (please please please...) ;)

Nastavnik: I'm still testing and tweaking the save game code in AP. When I'm certain that I have a solid build I'll ask Brad if we can put it up or if we should wait until we have the new races in.

Is anyone who is not using mods having trouble with the election window causing crashes in Altarian Prophecy? I couldn't reproduce it just now when I tried.

The code seems pretty solid, but I never got beyond the colonization stage of my game yesterday when I was testing, so I think that I'll test it a bit more.  It will also give me more time to fix additional bugs.

In a Mod the Picture "Event_spy" from normal galCiv is used for a InvasionsTactic. If I scroll to this InvasionsTactic the Picture is much to big and messy so that part of the text is not readable.

Could you please Include a routine that prefent such things if the Picture is not of the right size?

Cari - I use no mods and crashed at the first Election screen. It wasn't until I attempted to reload that I found that perhaps other things around the apartment will take priority.

Another point: If you save and reload the first turn, it works. I like to make sure that none of the Majors are dooomed, locked away in an isolated corner, before starting a game, so I save, CTRL-U, and if they've got lousy start positions, CTRL-N. Once I see that things will progress interstingly, I reload the uncheated first-turn save game.

Didn't see if anyone else mentioned this, that first-turn save games can be reloaded, but autosaves and later-game saves don't.

Right, the save game bug is known about and I'm working on it.

Were you losing control of the senate when it crashed?

nope :) and this is to the other readers in the forums cause you (Cari) and I were dealing with that very problem most of yesterday (monday) afternoon :)

I will not hold anybody to any date but roughly when will the next Beta be released ?

I really can not play the game with the current Beta since games can not be restored or saved.

I'd like that answered too... I just paid $70 2 weeks ago to get the game, and would like at least a regular beta-release schedule for my trouble. What dev. methodology are you using?

Vandycan, Can you?

Bug with 1.49[b].010 ?

Yesterday I installed the 06/01/2004 Altarian Prophecy build, on top of GalCiv 1.12.xxx (forgot the version number) and... to my surprise found that the new loader loaded the original GalCiv (all the menu options *exactly* the same).

Thinking I needed 1.13.080, I updated GalCiv. Made no difference. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled Altarian Prophecy, and there is still no difference. There were only two scenarios I could load with the scenario editor, btw, and no campaign at all.

Does it make a difference where I installed the games? GalCiv is under E:\Program Files\Strategy First\Galactic Civilizations. AP is under E:\Program Files\Stardock\Drengin.net\AltarianProphecy.

Both Galciv.exe's are at version 1.0.0.1

Confused,

Michel

Answering myself ... there *is* a 'Custom rule' option at the customization screen. Sorry :)

Don't bother checking the version string Windows returns. That always reads 1.0.0.1 unless explicitly set, and GalCiv doesn't do so.

That said, the differences between the two aren't obvious except on the first game setup screen, where you should have seen two extra options on the right, one of them greyed out. The working option should have been to load a custom rules file.

Vandycan, I don't know if there was any news on the subject, but in the galciv homepage there was a post by Frogboy earlier (6 jan. I think) this month saying that the next release would be in about 2 weeks. So we may be just one week away from that :) . As for the full release I think at first it was scheduled to sometime in february. Don't know how it has evolved.
So I guess, just a little more patience. You'll get what you paid for. I paid my 70$ almost one year ago, still waiting for the AP ;) .

(goes back to play in order to make time pass faster :) )

Well, if they wait long enough for my drengin.net subscription to expire, like it sounds like yours is about to ("almost one year ago"), I'll probably have to wait until there's more than AP to download before I plunk down another $25 to re-subscribe.

In the mean time, I'm getting myself used to Tiny games - which I never played before - while waiting for the save patch.

One thing I noted about the saved games, it is that the folder where the saved games should be it is missing, you have the saved single file that you use to reload the game, but the folder that should contain the game, all those files it is missing, I don't know if this help or not Carielf.

If you have access to the beta now, you will get the full version.

Jan 22 is the next scheduled beta.

Altarian Prophecy is using a new format for save games that puts all the data in a single file rather than several and needing a folder as the old format did.  The reason it crashes when loading a game saved after the first turn is because it was not calculating an offset correctly.
