Beta 4 Crash To Desktop

Clicking on "details" for any of my Class 16 planets causes a CTD. I have a 20 and a 26 as well, and both of those seem fine. Because I'm a W2K guy, Smart Exception isn't in the cards I'm afraid. (Although CDR Lucky Jack once volunteered to try and reproduce these and send in a report)

a complete reinstall using the drengin net reinstall option turned beta4 from a dog (old files problems, conflicts etc?) into a great game (wow!) for me.

However I have broadband and it took a while for a total re-install. I did the program files in 5mins, then started the graphics files and went out.

I wonder what file didn't get installed. That's not a good thing.

The debug.err file will tell you if you're missing anything.
My debug.err doesn't complain of anything. I hesitate to do a total reinstall without something more to go on, but I'll give it a shot.
debug for me in another recent crash thread, if you have the time & bandwidth i suggest a clean out and reinstall

Steevodeevo, that was a bum steer, I'm afraid. I just uninstalled, and reinstalled (w/o multimedia; that's coming next) and the exact same thing happened.

What size galaxy do you tend to play on?

I encountered another CTD. I clicked on a scout during an AI's turn and had game wink out on me. No information in the debug.err file.

I'm wondering if the user input needs to be disabled during computer turns.

I'm using WinMe :( with DirectX9 playing in the gigantic universe.

Something is going to have to be done during ship movement sine that's where performance issues happen there too.
I tend to play large or huge, Brad, but this crash was at medium too.
Brad,
perhaps you should disable the mouse buttons and keyboard press during the auto turn phase. The number of times I move a ship wrong because focus changes as I'm clicking on the location is beginning to get annoying. This would also stop people slowing down this phase by trying to do things, and possibly increase performance,

Paul.

My reinstall was total including m/media but I think Brad has resolved now? sorry if you wasted your time, hope its working now.

I did a total reinstall too (with multimedia). It didn' change anything.

I have just rewritten .exe, and did not help. I will try complete yesterday after I return from country (26th.)

Minor add to CTD on details .. i get this but only when select when cycling through the planet reports at end/start of turn. if bring up planet during play and select detail no problem and no CTD.

I have just finished a complete install from scratch, so I haven't been watching the forum for a couple of days (I only have a dialup - max 56K). I have also downloaded the new zip file Brad provided, but have yet to install it.

Some of the comments about "next turn" processing ring true for me. I have noticed lately that the clock that appears on the "turn" button dissappears much too soon. This has caused me problems on both 3Z builds and the windowed test that Cari sent me that fixed a number of problems that made 3z1 unplayable. I have to agree: The keyboard and mouse inputs to the game (but not those that bypass the game to the OS) MUST be dissabled during "next turn" processing AND, I think, during the part of the "autopilot" processing where the game is busy moving ships. And 1) the clock should be used over the "find" button while the game is actively moving ships during "autopilot processing", 2). The clock should stay on the turn button until the project completion processing is complete (the last planet view has had the "done" button (not the "next" button) pressed). The lack of these clues to what the game is doing is causing a lot of the problems I have run into.

I tried the "details" problem with my current game and got the SE report below. There are three reports, the first is with the original Beta 4 exe, the second two are with the zip file Brad made available in another thread. I loaded my game from a save file and went directly to the planet list in all three cases. The first and second reports are with a class 16 planet. Then I tried the other class planets I have in this game (20, 18, 17, 16 (which I skipped this time), and 15) and it did not crash until I tried it on the class 15 planet. What is interesting to me is that this was happening on 3z1 only on Earth, now is happening on any class 15 or 16 planet. (I may have to colonize a class 14 planet to see if it happens with it.)

I seem to be able to reporduce my CTD with a 100% of the time. All I need to do is save a game then come back later load the game then click on the ship icon thats the one with all the triagles in it and then select the hero then make it move then locate my other ship and move it and just after the second ship has finished moving bang nice desktop of mine. I can send you the save file if you like. :notsure:

it's a repeatable crash. I've got a saved game if you need it. The last minor race just defecteed to me prior to this crash
