User interface: Can I/How do I......

Questions from a newbie, maybe suggestions for updates?

Hey everyone. I'm new to the game and have only tried the tiniest galaxies with one or two foolish aliens so far to figure out how things work. I'm looking forward to a full blown event (big galaxy and many aliens) but get somewhat frustrated when trying to do some things. I hope I haven't overlooked how to do these. Also hoping that they can be done at all. If not, I guess take them as suggestiosn for future enhancements to the user interface!

1) When I try to upgrade a particular ship type in the shipyard, it takes me to the ship creator with only one piece of suggested hull. If I'm upgrading a particular type and selected it before hitting "upgrade", shouldn't it copy over the existing type so that I can see, pick and choose from the existing elements exactly what pieces I want to upgrade. Do I have to always build from scratch? I've shied away from trying any custom ships because I don't want to build from scratch, but I'm sure I'm missing an awesome piece of the game because of it.

2) Is there a way to set your screen so it jumps to any moving ship? I'd like to see where they go and what anomalies they may be passing, but instead I see a ship head off screen or don't see it move at all until it needs new orders.

3) Is there a way to select and order multiple techs to be researched? What about choosing more than one different type of ship for that planet's starport queue? If I know what I want to do through several steps along the way, why can't I set down those plans and let them ride until the queue empties?

4) Is there a way to zoom in/out on the tech tree, or at least to change the font size and size of box? Even using the full screen mode I don't see very much. Maybe a way to jump to a particular tech? (for instance, if I just finished researching the first tech that opens up battleship and want to get to those as quickly as possible, could I type in the second thing on that list and have it jump me there, and then I can work back to see what I have to do next)

5) Actually, combining #3 and #4 together, is there anyway to say "I want to work along the quickest path to this tech (or this ship or whatever)", preferably with a click in the top window where it shows the ship or tech needed, and have the game queue out everything I will need to get there?

This one isn't so much a "how to" question/interface suggestion as a plain unknown when trying to divide my money in the smartest manner:

- I see that upping the research setting gets me my techs faster. I have an inkling (but am not sure) that raising the social setting will speed up the building of items on the planet. But what does the money going to military specifically support - especially when I don't have any ships with weapons?

I'll try to find some type of player guide around here so that may help, but I'd like to hear if I'm way of base on these.

Nice to meet you!

Tony

1. There is an option in the shipbuilder screen to retain the ship equipment when upgrading. Make sure it is checked.

2. Follow Auto Pilot Ships in the Interface Options might do what you want. Try checking it.

3. No. One tech at a time.

4. No. One size fits all, so to speak. A lot of us would like those options. And there is no place to type anything in the tech tree.

5. The quickest path to any tech is to research the Research branch first, at least as far as Acadamies.
I say at least, because at that point I research Xeno Ethics to align with Neutral so I can then research the Neutrality Learning Center, which is just after the Acadamies once you align with Neutral.
Once you get the NLC, if you go as far as Discovery Sphere you can get the Omega Research Center.
With those research facilities you should be able to out research the AI with no problem, getting you to any tech faster.

The Military slider controls how much spending is dedicated to ship building, whether they have weapons or not.

You won't learn everything in a single day, or in a single game. Just play around with it until you get the feel for what works for you. If you want the advanced hulls, research up to at least Large Hulls, and Massive if you want the huge ships. And if you open the some of the XML files - like GC2Types.XML - in Wordpad you will get an idea of the requirements for things like the large and huge hulls.
