CTD right after "horrible space creature" message pops up

Playing on a gigantic galaxy size, all computer players set to "normal" IQ level. I had the message about how some merchants had spotted a dreadful space creature (with a properly horrid-looking graphic that looks like a spacegoing fire ant) pop up, and then on the very next turn, when I went to check my domestic stats, the game had a CTD - screen went black as if the monitor was turning off, and then the desktop came back up. No error message. I wasn't playing from the Drengin Network control panel at the time, but directly from a GalCiv desktop icon, so I'm not sure whether SmartException recorded the error message.
