Galciv vs MOO3

GalCiv has been a multi-threaded game ever since ver 1.0 for OS/2 hit the market 9 years ago.
According to Amazon.com:
1) MOO2 is DOS based
2) GalCiv will be released on March 18, 2003 and is a Strategy First product
Why is MOO3 getting so much press?

3) GalCiv port to Windows has added many improvements
4) 9 years refining this game must count for something
5) it multi-tasks in beta almost as well as os/2 ver did
(need improvements in game loads and auto-pilot)
6) Will coding this game to run under 98/ME hurt gameplay vs making XP required OS. I know most people havent upgraded to XP but I did buy OS/2 ver 3 and 4 just to play GalCiv 2.0 Gold with Shipyards!
7) just call me a die-hard GalCiv fan :)

Whats with this VS, the more both sell the better for strategy games future.

Agree with the last post. I hope both are very successful, because that will mean more TB strat games in the future. I never played the original GalCiv, but I did play and love the original MOO - it's one of my favorite three games of all time. And while M002 was not a favorite, many, many people swear by that game.

I am playing and enjoying the GalCiv beta, but I am also very hopeful that MOO3 will be a major hit - and if the reviews are favorable, I'll buy it also. It's not like there are a dozen games in this genre coming out this year.

Unfortunately, it seems that not only is TBS games a dying breed, but PC games in general seems to be in serious decline.
Take a look at how many PC games where released for christmas, and compare it to just 2 or 3 years ago.
We are entering the "Age of Consols" unfortunately, as I see it, since there some things the PC does A LOT better than any PS 8 ever can.

Enough threadjacking...
Galciv and Moo3 is two very different games - hopefully I will get my review copy of Moo3 in time to review them more or less together to differentate them and show their strenghts and weakness's

Well GalCiv is pretty darn spiffy, granted. But... Moo3 has much better graphics, many more races, much more customizability, an excellent license and history, and a well-known publisher. I, for one, have already pre-paid and plan on obsessing over it for a while after release.

Also, it's gonna be on the shelves on Feb 26th at the very latest, and this won't be out till March.

i don't think you can judge galciv graphics just yet. I think there was a thread that talked about holding some of that back so the game would seem fresh to the beta users. I like the original MOO but MOO2 was poo :D

If MOO3 is good then i'll buy it, but in my book galciv is my game of choice. But Flemming is right about pc games being a dying breed. Variety and the LA Times business section, said today that pc games were down 10% last year to 1.5 Billion in the U.S. People who love these types of games will hopefully keep buying them to make it still viable to produce them. I plan on buying tgalciv MMXXII :D (may i live that long

I'll buy MOO3 if only for comparison's sake to Galciv. I'd like to see if they have any good 'new' ideas or if it is simply a hopped up version of MOO2.

PC gaming isn't going downhill at all, that rumour/theory has been going around every year for the past 5 years. (according to PC Gamer anyway) This last year saw a great number of excellent titles.

Moo3 is a different game then Moo2, for one its not the same developers. I baought gal civ 2 years ago.. (through dregin.net) I still play corpate machine and lightweight ninja at times. So i've already paid for it anyways. In my mind there is no either or.. its both.. i'll get both and play both.. then get my but in gear and write my own so i can make really good AI.. (hopefully learning AI)

Huh?? In what way are MOO3's graphics better than GalCiv's? Show me a screenshot of MOO3 that makes you think that it has better graphics.

' Variety and the LA Times business section, said today that pc games were down 10% last year to 1.5 Billion in the U.S. '

Everything was down last year. We're in the middle of a minor recession.

'PC gaming isn't going downhill at all, that rumour/theory has been going around every year for the past 5 years.'

Alot longer than 5 years. Rumors of the sort have been popping up since the days of the NES. Interesting that they ignore PCs that turned into consoles (there were consoles based on the Commodore 64 and one of the Amstrad PC clones), but obcess over consoles that are turning into PCs, like the PS2.

Arturus,
My oberservation is based on number of new games released recently, compared to a few years ago...
Also, I've been talking to quite a few store owners lately, asking about their shrinking pc'games shelves and increasing xbox, ps2 and so forth shelve room, and they agree - more console games, less pc games.

Again I ask, how many decent pc games where released this xmas??? that should be a nice indicator.

Well, on the outside, nothing is different, except that if you look at shelvespace in stores, at least here in Denmark, you will see an increase in Console space, and a decrease in pc game shelve space.

I believe the technology is catching up on PC's, making console's just as good, and in some cases perhaps even better to play games on, and thats beginning to show.

Of course, this is a personal opinion, not backed by anything by some observations and a few talks with shop owners.

Console games are not going to kill PC games because the two don't compete that much.

You're not going to see a MOO3 or GalCiv on a Playstation.

Actually Brad thats not entireally true.. unfortnutaly an NDA prevents details (But it was 2 years ago, how long does an NDA last if your no longer employeed anyways? I knew i sould have bad a digital copy) but a certian publishur was looking at a certain 4X game and ask how hard it would be to make a port to their console.

Personally i don't think it would sell but hey.. it was at least seriously thought about.
Kind of irrelevant isn't it? If you want to play real strategy games you need a PC. That won't change because one 4X game had the possibility of being ported to a console.

Tandis - why??? Why do you need a PC to play a strategy game??
Why can't Galciv run perfectly fine on say, an X-box? It's not like we use the keyboard in the extremes, and there are ways around that.
Most games today use the mouse, clicking icons no matter HOW complex they are.

I'm not for the decline of PC games, hehe don't get me wrong - but the industry should probably realize that there could be a real danger of this, and most of us PC owners today probably wouldn't like this.

Brad,
the two don't compete much? Well, perhaps not directly, i.e. same games and such, but saleswise I would guess they do compete. How many youngsters get a computer to play games on now, compared to how many get a console??

I'm 30, and in my teens we all got our commodore 64's, amigas and finally PC's, but most young people I see today, get X-box or PS2 or some such like that... Their parents might own a PC, but hey - They are OLD right ;)

oh well, enough doomtalk and prophesising - I love my PC and I love strategy games, and I hope they continue to make both until I die of old age in a retirement home, plugged in and playing GALCIV 9 or Doom 3 ;)
