Beta 4z comments following lengthy play

Possible bugs & polishes-

1. Music, video and sound effects seem to compete for resources on my system

2. Range update of starbases is one turn late.

3. Two colony ships from different races sat off a planet I had beaten them to for most of the game.

4. There seems to be a soundbug or perhaps way too fast playback rate on the ship combat sound effects resulting in a high pitched screeches for certain weapons systems.

5. On the yearly report screen I was once shown to be the '5th most Influential race' yet (as was the case) I had 59% of the Influence in the Galaxy which meant I was the most influential race and being miss-reported by the yearly report.

6. There seems to be a miss-alignment of the white 'overlay' on the 'Good' racial screen. This shows itself most obviously as a flickering of the left border on the convoy listing window when the ships are moving or a pop-up appears.

7. Most curious one this - The research screen - and a couple of notes of the accompanying research tune started to appear every time I got GNN News on new ships, planetary production etc. This went on for an entire play session. After closing down the game and re-loading the saved game this stopped and returned to normal.

8. Moving constructors onto existing starbases does not trigger the add to starbase request pop-up if the Constructors have turns remaining.

9. On the trade screen descriptions of tech's etc to trade over run the field width in which they are displayed and result in you not knowing what they are. e.g.- "Advanced Interstellar....cut

10. Trade screen scroll box does not have a push scroll option - the one with the little 'button' icon in teh scroll bar is the nicest.

11. The Starhawk 'i' info pop up shows "Level: no string found"

12. Phase III Factory description on starbase upgrades shows several typos and many of the text discriptions run out of space on the display box.

General comments -

a) I think it would be useful if the Social development select options were colour coded by category - using the same colour key as the graphs (trade, tech, Influence etc) to show the dominant improvement that selecting this social improvement will give. Otherwise, as I have suggested before, a filter of some sort. I accept that some do more than one benefit which may be problematic.

b) Can you overlay some lighted window ports and hatchways on the starbase 3d objects. Whilst these are really neatly drawn they have no impression of being 'hollow' and feel like solid metal objects.

c) Getting AI's to sell planets for wonders, tech and cash is still to cheap. Stopping them from selling their last planet isn't really enough.

d) A different style and soundtrack for pop-ups from the 'routine' one for anomalies would be helpful for things like planetary defections and other major news items as I tend to mentally switch off from these after a while as you see them all too often for anomalies :notsure:

e) Could we see a symbol or a simple asterix in front of 'Wonder' social options on the planetary selection list - at the moment there are lots of these and they don't stand out from the standard social projects items on the ever more extensive list of social choices.

f) On the main global map screen Treasury uses dollar ($) symbol - should it not use 'c' or 'credits' or whatever it is to be consistent with symbology in other screens?

g) Question - what are the negative implications of investing in espionage on races?

h) The new sliders on the trade screens are physically to small to slide at the lower and upper ends with any degree of finesse- there is room it appears to make them bigger

you know i wouldn't normally do this but you can't tell whether anyone from Stardock has looked at these threads can you? And I spent a bit of time putting this list together ;)

It shows, Steevo. Very well done. I couldnt have done a better job myself. I 2nd all of Steevo's comments. :)

Steve,
the people from Stardock seem pretty good at reading all messages. They just don't always post replies (takes too long to reply to everything).

My 2 credits:

(3.) I think this is happening to many of the AI ships. Steve’s colony ship is a classic example, but often warships seem to be caught in limbo as well. The mini-map in my current game has a very aesthetic diagonal arrow composed of Yor warships that has stayed static throughout the bulk of the game. To be honest I think there are still glitches in the auto-pilot routine(s); I find that the only safe way to ensure a ship reaches its destination in a timely fashion is to move it manually.

(4.) Some of the weapons sound FX remind me of early Run DMC - some fine scratching going on. :)

(8.) Hmm, I’ve never had a problem like this. Perhaps your Constructors need better air brakes?

(12.) Yes, there are still lots of typos and grammatical curve balls. The grammar may not get noticed when you're deep in space, but the misspelling is obvious even when I'm just playing for fun and not "testing". I'd be more than happy to fix either or both problems. I couldn't do what JavaScout's done, but text files full of English are easy.

Also -

13. It took me a couple of turns to take out a Drengin star base that was probably fully loaded (for the Drengin's tech level). I say probably, because I couldn't see it beneath the 25 (twenty-five) constructors that were sitting on it. I believe they call that Artificial Ignorance. ;p

14. The espionage information on the left side of the main panel of the Diplomacy-Stats screen is not scrollable. As a result, one race will display information on Soldiering and Weapons, but not Espionage spending, the next race will display Weapons and Espionage spending, but not Soldiering, and so on. The information displayed seems to alternate as you flip through the races – races 1 and 3 will display the same information, races 2 and 4 will display the same information, just not the same information as races 1 and 3. This information may be unimportant for most players, but since the game tallies it for us, it would be nice to have it scrollable (and maybe even logically sorted).

I listed some things I'd like to see in a separate mini-map thread, so I won't repeat them here.

Has anybody else noticed that when you turn off the mini-map display for Stars, Ships, and Auto-pilot you're left with a display of the available unclaimed resources? Neat trick. Likely I'm the last to know.

In the Save Game menu, if you select, for example, GAME N and rename it GAME X, the dialogue asks if you want to overwrite this game. After you say yes, GAME N still shows up in the list along with GAME X. So what, you say? So, it would still be great to be able to delete older saved games from within the game interface and avoid this altogether.

Lastly, it’s good to see that the game will be delayed a wee bit. I think it needs the extra spit and polish. Although the Windows version of GalCiv has once again turned me into the computer geek equivalent of a crack whore, it’s good to know that the people who hooked me care about their product. Continued kudos to the Stardock team (and Strategy First) for going for the gold ring.

End transmission.

[regarding a starbase]
"I couldn't see it beneath the 25 (twenty-five) constructors that were sitting on it."

I've seen this happen when a large number of constructors are sent to the destination point on autopilot and one of the "magic" changes happens to the destination that hoses the autopilots ability to recognize that the endpoint has been reached and that it's now time to do something.

Sorry Steve, our lists over here have gotten a-bit longer with the recient delay, so everyone is pretty frantic with getting new additions in before the gamma. I'll pick off the items on you list I'll be overseeing...

5. I'll check the code that tallies this up and see where the miscalculation is being made.

7. Weird. Could have something to do with the "music fade out" code. I'll look into it.

9. Yeah, there's alot of areas where text is just too long for the space given. My best suggestion would be to abbreviate long words in such descriptions. (ex. "Advanced Power Plant" would become "Adv. Power Plant") It still reads the same, and spacing on the screen won't get messed up.

10. Yeah, i've noticed that. It's on the list.

11 & 12. Easy to fix.

a. From a continuity standpoint, having different colored text for each item would distract the user rather more than it helps them. It would be nice to have a little colored dot next to each item performing the same function, but even then it's time spent vs. benifits received. Even if youre looking for an improvement that ups production (say there's 5 red-manufacturing imps in the list), you'd still end up looking at how much each projects helps that attribute, so you're still looking at the stats window anyhow. I would much rather see a color indicating Trade Good vs Normal Imp vs Acheivement vs Wonder, but correct me if you really feel this is a valid feature...we're certainly not the "end all" when it comes to adding stuff to the game :)

d. I like this one. :) I'm the same way, and an audio cue that "this message is different/important" would certainy keep me from blindly pressing the "Done" button.

e. Agreed, but again I think colors should indicate this.

g. none

h. Honestly, theyre really supposed to be for rough adjustmens. We kept in the ability to type in the numbers for people that want that precision.

OK, that's my input. You'll probably see some of the others jump in with their 2 cents. In the meantime, im gonna get back to work before my list gets any longer ;)

Hey Scott!

Don't apologise I wasn't complaining :) more I was appologising for my own arrogance in bumping my own post. I only did this as I wanted to be really certain this one hadn't been missed as I thought I had picked up a couple of significant issues. I really don't expect an acnowledgement of my posts by SD you are too busy. I personally like this laid back approach to posting, from both sides, I think its creative.
Over and out.

'5. On the yearly report screen I was once shown to be the '5th most Influential race' yet (as was the case) I had 59% of the Influence in the Galaxy which meant I was the most influential race and being miss-reported by the yearly report.'

I believe the yearly report screen reports per turn influence. The pie chart on the UP tab reports total influence since the last UP Meeting, which can be altered by things that don't affect the per turn influence, esp. dipolmacy.
