Finding planets a problem

Have been trying to play on a Huge map. Two big gameplay problems have jumped out at me, and I am finding that they are putting me off playing! >:(

Firstly, the Map display, top right corner, does not show enough detail for this size map. When it is zoomed in, it becomes almost useless for setting ship destinations - scout ships etc. The stars are just dots, and I can not distinuish between my Colonies and anyone elses. It would be good if the currently displayed map could be also shown in the Main game window as an Info screen, with the destination setting functionality of the smaller display map.

Secondly, In the game I just abandoned on a Huge map, I had discovered about 10 colonisable stars - Planets 15+. I had about 8 colony ships to send forth from different colonies. Trying to match a ripe planet with a colony ship was a nightmare! >:( Just as we have a Colony listing display, we really need to also have a Explored Planets display, much like that in Master of Orion 2 - functionally.

I've now gone back to playing smaller maps.

You say-

click on the one of the buttons - say for example planetary population and the planets will light up in your and the AI players colours

second point -

dont understand - sorry if you explain (perhaps its just me?) we can probably help.

I think he means to have a listing, just like we do for our planets, which would list every planet we've discovered, and be sortable by various categories, such as planet quality. This would make it easier to locate planets for colonization. I would assume that it would be good if planets would be removed from the list as they are colonized, by you or someone else, or at least have an indicator of their state regarding colonization.

I agree that something would be useful. Right now, I have to keep sidenotes, which is always annoying in a computer game.

Ok, First issue:

The stars are showing colour respective of their ownership. But because the map SO big, and the display is so small, I can not tell the difference between the colours. Only that a star is not White. I can of cause zoom in, but I then lose the Range grid boundary that I find oh so important. Also, in this particular game, Sol was right on the edge of the map, top left corner sector. When zooming in, the stap map never went down to any sector even close to Sol, and so I had to muck around trying to get it to re-center to show Sol and surrounding colonies.

Issue two: I have 3 scouts and the Survey ship. The scouts are under manual control and the survey ship is on AutoSurvey. Every colony I have is building Colony Ships. Eight colonys complete Colony ships in the same turn. In the time it has taken to build these Colony ships, the Scouts and Survey ships have located 10 stars that have good planets, that are within range. They have also found at least another 3-4 stars with good planets that are out of range of Colony ships. The star map is only slightly zoomed in so I can still see the Range grid. Now I have to click around the map, within the range grid of a colony ship, to re-find the stars that have good planets, this early in the game means they are Yellow stars. It would be a heck of a lot easier if I could simply call up a screen/Listing of discovered planets/stars, ordered by range and class, and then either jump to the star, like in the Fleets listing, or simply click on the star/planet to send the currently selected colony ship to this destination. Hope that clarifies my issue.

That is indeed a good idea, Wydom@aker. That would be a nice feature.

I've seen this request many times over the last 3 months and I dont know if SD will implement it. You might be better off using pen and paper .

The request for this feature is much older than 3 months. I recall seeing a promise that it will appear, if not in 1.0 then in 1.x. With the delay in shipment until Mar 25, perhaps there will be time to add more features.

Here's hoping.

I may be way off the mark, but I would expect that it would not be all that difficult to implement such a Listing, as the basic functionality already exists in the Colony Listing, all that really needs changing is the underlying data source or filter/query.

It also needs the code and tables to save and display the data. The code would be the most time consuming part (if more graphics aren't needed).

True, I made the assumption that there was already a data store holding this information, as well as the Colony data, and that it simply needed querying. I'll shut up now. :)
